197625929n.p.: Warner Bros. Publications Inc. Very Good. c.1976. First Edition. Softcover. both volumes modestly edge-worn with light age-toning to edge of text block cheap paper; Volume I had small check-marks next to nine titles in the contents list; Volume II has a couple of small scrape marks on the front cover and a short diagonal crease at the top right corner of the front cover. An incredible compilation of music lyrics and guitar chords for about 200 songs selected to highlight "the major trends in the Rock movement from its beginnings in the mid fifties to the current progressive sound. Volume I traces early Rock 'n' Roll from the songs of Elvis Presley and Little Richard through the Folk Rock movement of Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot up to the emergence of the Beatles in the late sixties as the dominant force in Rock music. Volume II spans the period from the Beatles trend-setting 'Sgt. Pepper' album into the Hard Rock of the Led Zeppelin heavy metal sound and through the rapid evolution of Soft Folk Jazz and Country Rock of the seventies to the current Disco beat." Although there's a copyright disclaimer about the "many songs we could not use" it definitely includes a lot of milestones including no fewer than 32 Beatles tunes. The selections in Volume I are divided into three sections: Early Rock n' Roll Elvis Little Richard Sam Cooke Bill Haley etc.; Folk Rock - the 60's Bob Dyan Peter Paul & Mary Joni Mitchell etc.; and Rock n' Roll 1960's dominated by The Beatles and The Bee Gees. Volume II contains: Rock - 60's/70's more Beatles & Bee Gees also The Who The Rolling Stone Elton John and others; Soft & Folk Rock - 1970's Neil Young Jackson Browne Linda Ronstadt Cat Stevens etc.; Hard Rock Deep Purple Led Zeppelin Alice Cooper; Country Rock the Allman Brothers the Eagles; Progressive & Jazz Rock Joni Mitchell Yes; and last AND least Disco Rock the Staples Singers the Average White Band and the return of the Bee Gees!. I've cited the big names of course but there are plenty of lesser lights here too and even a few mysteries does "Tom Cat" by Tom Scott & the L.A. Express ring a bell with anybody. NOTE that an additional shipping fee will be requested for international shipping of this heavy two-volume set or for Priority Mail service to U.S. destinations.
