One of 240 copies duodecimo size 126 pp. "Woodwork" contains twenty-one wood engravings of tools by the inimitable Eric Gill 1882-1940; a highly regarded printmaker sculptor and typographer as well as a complicated man Gill provided illustrations for numerous fine press publications by the Golden Cockerel Press and the Saint Dominic's Press as well as with Pepler under the imprint of the St. Dominic's Press.<br/><br/>An informative look at the art of carpentry by craftsman-woodworker Arthur Romney Green 1872-1945 who like Gill and Pepler was influenced by William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement. First edition first issue with "post est" error in the Caesar medallion on page 108 of Volume II. In a lavish full brown morocco binding with five raised bands and ornate gilt stamping to spine borders on covers wide turn-ins and beautifully patterned endsheets; all edges gilt. Near Fine with a light amount of rubbing to joints spines lightly faded a scuff to the front cover of Volume II and small former owner bookplates of noted collector Abel E. Berland to the front pastedowns. Pine's Latin text was based on Talbot's 1699 edition and is remarkable for being entirely illustrated with engraved copper plates throughout the text. Laid in is a period gift envelope with one sheeted folded to make a 4 page note addressed to Miss Jennie Baird - Present dated Wednesday May 14th and signed Sincerely L. L. Watson. The letter explains the "peculiar circumstances" of the gift - Aunt Let Lauretta is on her deathbed and is gifting this lovely book and a bar of soap to her friend Jennie whose gifts of flower bouquets have cheered her in her demise - "God's flowers Dear dear Jennie; oh that the graces of the spirit may bloom in her heart." The final 2 end pages bear small pin holes from where the letter was pinned in at one time.
