It was written after the return to England by the Secretary to the mission Sir George Leonard Staunton 1st Baronet 1737-1801 based on his own observations and notes from other crewmembers including his twelve-year-old son Sir George Thomas Staunton 2nd Baronet. <br /> <br /> "The account offers rich insights into the beginnings of British Imperialism in China and thus makes it an important primary source for the historiography of Sino-Western relations. There is an academic dispute whether the account marks a sudden turning point in British-Chinese dynamics or reflects a slow and complex divergence. <br /> <br /> While the political and economic ambitions of the embassy failed the account by Staunton brought back detailed descriptions of and observations on the Chinese culture that were received with curiosity in the West and led to the commercial success of the book and the publication of several translations and subsequent writings on the Macartney Mission." Frontispice, feuillet de titre, (20) 481 (31) pages, illustrées de deux portraits (Marie Stuart (en frontispice) et Alexandre Farnese), et de 9 planches dépliantes, dont des vues d’Anvers, Gand, Bruxelles, deux cartes et batailles navales, petite déchirure au 2ème feuillet de texte avec atteinte marginale au texte. Quatrième volume de l'importante Histoire de la guerre des Pays-Bas, oeuvre du jésuite italien Famien Strada (1572–1649), historien de renom et professeur d'éloquence au Collège romain. Composée à l’origine en latin sous le titre De Bello Belgico, cette histoire de la révolte des Provinces-Unies contre la couronne d'Espagne couvre les principaux épisodes de la guerre de Quatre-Vingts Ans (1568-1648). La traduction française de ce tome, due au P. du Ryer - écrivain et traducteur prolifique du XVIIe siècle - se distingue par un style fluide et oratoire, typique de son époque. Du Ryer, célèbre pour avoir également traduit le Coran et divers auteurs antiques et modernes, propose ici une version élégante, parfois libre, mais fidèle à l'esprit du texte. Ce tome IV poursuit le récit avec une riche galerie de portraits de chefs militaires, des analyses politiques et un souci constant de la mise en scène historique. Bon état des planches et du texte, bon exemplaire.

John Shore 1st Baron Teignmouth 1751-1834 was an official of the East India Co. and served as Governor General of Bengal from 1793 to 1797; the following year he was created Baron Teignmouth. He was also the first president of the British and Foreign Bible Society.
