176626550Naples 1766-1776. A single aquatint plate drawn and engraved after the original pieces in the Hamilton collection. The colour aquatint shows a bacchanal scene-- a youth in peplos reclines on an ornate couch he holds a large bowl in his left hand his right gestures toward a kylix above--all within a Greek-key tondo. Above him there are three dancing satyrs. This is a nicely detailed image on a black background coloured in shades of brown tan terracotta and gold. Printed on a single folio sheet measuring approximately 20" x 15" the image approximately 8.25" X 10". Now presented in cream mounting boards 22" x18" behind clear mylar. A very fine plate in an excellent state of preservation. A BEAUTIFUL AND IMPRESSIVE PLATE FROM A MASTERPIECE OF CLASSIC ART RENDERINGS AND PUBLICATION. Hamilton served as British envoy to the court of Naples where he began collecting Greek vases and other antiquities immediately upon arriving at his post. In 1766–67 he published a volume of engravings of his collection entitled A Collection of Etruscan Greek and Roman antiquities from the cabinet of the Honble. Wm. Hamilton. A further three volumes were produced in 1769–76. Josiah Wedgwood the potter and porcelain maker drew great inspiration from the reproductions presented in Hamilton's volumes.
While widely recognized for their beauty the reproductions from Hamilton's vases have become evidence of the irreconcilable problem of neoclassicism in the Romantic period. Significant changes in the way the vases were engraved over a span of thirty or forty years demonstrate how an immutable collection of objects is subject to radical shifts in representation in response to the social and artistic styles of the time. hardcover

186726900Melbourne: Hamel & Ferguson 1867. Print. Plate XV from Eugene von Guérard's Australian Landscapes 1866-68.

American Creek Mt. Kembla. Trees pictured include cabbage trees bangalow palms and flame trees. Timbermen are working in the foreground to fell the huge trees. Von Guerard describes the scene thus: This sylvan scene is situated at a distance of little more than ten miles from Wollongong near the junction of a little stream upon which some prosaic devotee of the bottle has bestowed the dishonouring appellation of the Brandy and Water Creek with the American Creek and at the foot of a noble range of mountains. With the lofty bangalow palm the cabbage palm the gigantic wild fig-tree the fire tree otherwise known as the blaze tree with its vividly scarlet blossoms are intermingled the nettle tree the rose-wood the sassafras the white-wood the wild rose numerous varieties of the fern tree and parasites innumerable the whole being woven together into one dense and almost impenetrable mass of foliage. Unfortunately the progress of settlement is necessitating the destruction of some of these magnificent forests which in many instances clothe a rich chocolate soil of especial value to the farmer. At the time this view was sketched numerous fires had been kindled by the wood-cutters and the stately giants were rapidly falling before the pitiless axe of the hardy pioneers of civilization.

Color lithograph signed in the plate with the oval blind stamp for the publisher Hamel & Ferguson below the title. The rocks have been worn into the most grotesque and fantastic shapes by the action of the waves which rush in with a majestic sweep from the Southern Ocean . the artist has indicated the entrance of Port Phillip by the position of the steamer faintly visible in the offing." 186726902Melbourne: Hamel & Ferguson 1867. Print. Very good overall. From Eugene von Guérard's Australian Landscapes 1866-68. Von Guerard is said to have painted the work "at the entrance to Dobson's Gully in the Dandenong's'. The area was the location where Thomas Dobson made his home and established a timber camp. He called it 'Lightwood Gully' the original name for Ferntree Gully.

"His remarkable image of a fern-tree gully in the Dandenong Ranges some 40 kilometres east of Melbourne conveys a sense of the landscape as a spiritual sanctuary. Painted on return to the artist's Melbourne studio Ferntree Gully in the Dandenong Ranges is a work that combines von Guerard's meticulous observation of local plant species with his artiistic interest in compositional arrangement and the creation of a 'mood' particular to this environment. In this case we are privy to the magical world of a bower - an enclosed gully of natural foliage created by towering tree ferns. A pool of light on the forest floor leads us to two male lyrebirds cast in shadow one withits characteristic tail feathers raised.: Tiom Bonyhady Australian Colonial Paintings in the Australian National Gallery Canberra; Australian National Gallery 1986 p. 171.

Color lithograph signed in the plate with the oval blind stamp for the publisher Hamel & Ferguson below the title. 1826ABE-90785021091826 Faust was Goethe's most celebrated creation with international editions in his lifetime and subsequently in films and books across the world with translations in most languages. This is a complete set of the 26 engravings Moritz Retzsh produced as an illustration of Goethe's text; the book has no words in it not even a publisher or date. What it does have is a fabulous set of the original plate pulls complete with plate marks. Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch was a German painter draughtsman and etcher; much celebrated in his day. This is in a way a fine example of what would now called a graphic novel. The 26 etched pictures tell the story and words are not needed. In Germany there were many such books without words and this one in particular influenced the English Pre Raphaelites. This volume is in its original binding with a very fragile leather spine which turns around to the original marbled cover boards which are also in a fragile state. There is no title page or date and no publishing house is mentioned. The corners are leather also and the spine has five subtly raised bands and no title. A much poorer copy of this was featured in the exhibition of Pre Raphaelites at Tate Britain. My copy is considerably better but it is by no means a fine one. It has been used and looked at probably a great deal over the last 200 years or so. The leather is very worn the marbled cover boards are patinated and there is a mixture of hand written names and an inscription on the front end paper. It is very rare in any state at all because it was easily broken up so the plates could be framed. This is I must stress a complete bound full set and as such it is very rare indeed. The earlier of the two dated inscriptions states 1826; but it cannot be viewed as an accurate issue date. An edition exists which has a German title page and text but this is not one of those. It's a bit of a mystery. The exhibited copy in the Tate exhibition was inspected by me I knew one of the curators and it was also without any text. International Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. hardcover
