27048401Japan n.d. ca 1830-40's. Three prints two from an erotic book each in 2 parts: 20.5 x 14; 3rd is 19 x 14 cm. and is probably a later work from about the Meiji period or 1880's. The first two are slightly discoloredthe last one is clean. . . . THREE ORIGINAL COLOR WOODBLOCK EROTIC PRINTS . . . The first two prints are from what is probably the same erotic book Shunpon both show a couple engaged in love-making. Each has text and comments of the lovers while engaged in love-making. . One pair of pages are re-backed the other not they are from about the 1830-40's. . The third item is newer and quite clean. It shows a couple under a Kimono while the man caresses her vagina. This is probably a Meiji work from about 1870-80's. Its quite clean and bright with good image. . All are tipped on to a hand-made Washi paper backing sheet which is 17 x 20 cm. . Good examples from the "Shunga" erotic woodblock prints genre. . . unknown

Other than considerable wear and tear to the dj a name on the flyleaf and an inkstain at the top of the last few page edges not affecting text the book is in very good condition. There are no rips tears markings etc.---and the pages and binding are tight see photo. OCLC locates only 12 copies in book form. Quarto sized 10" x 12" in blindstamped red cloth hardcovers stamped in gilt over black tape cloth spine. Unpaginated 46 pp. A uniquely designed geography/freading aid for young people that instead of maps features a full page of small hieroglyphic engravings for each descriptive word or group of words that illustrated notable facts places names etc. for each of the states covered. For example for Maine one small item is "The minerals are" with a small engraving of a handiron "granite" small picture of a rock; "More engraving of a ship are built here than in any other State". Each hieroglyphic page is followed by a single page of text of desciptive text which which is an non-illustated transcription of the the illustrated page. Covers well soiled though the gilt titling is still bright. Some tape stains to the dark brown endpapers front hinge split but all pages firmly attached; dampstaing to the lower aprox. quarter of all pages. Christmas 1882 gift inscription on the first front blank to a boy from his grandfather. Complete SOLD AS IS. E.P. Dutton hardcover

The text is printed on handmade paper with an elaborate armorial watermark. Small label inside back wrapper for the Burrows Brothers Co. Cleveland Ohio probably the printer. The plate was only previously printed in 1747 for inclusion in Thomas Whincop's A List of All the Dramatic Authors with Some Account of Their Lives. Very scarce. Six folio plates. In very good condition some of the plates and tissues have a little edgewear or minor light soiling in no case effecting the printed images. Black morocco spine label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title "Lewis's Etchings. Red morocco label on front board with double gilt-ruled border gilt corner rosettes and title "Etchings of the Physiognomy Manners & Character of the People of France & Germany." All page edges marbled to match boards and endpapers. Remains of a small circular label on front fixed endpaper reading "Abbey" along lower edge. The plates were issued for insertion in T.F. Dibdin's Bibliographical Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany 1821. Included are directions for placing the plates in Dibdin's work. Lewis made hundreds of drawings while accompanying Thomas Frognall Dibdin on his tour of France and Germany some of which were used to illustrate Dibdin's book. A disagreement about how much Dibdin owed Lewis for the drawings developed after the tour and the additional plates presented here were undoubtedly published by Lewis to generate some extra income from his work. In Very Good Condition: leather and boards are rubbed most heavily at head of spine and corners; corner of title page lightly soiled; light foxing primarily affecting the leaves on which the plates are mounted rather than the plates themselves; plates are clean and crisp. The beautifully illustrated first illustrated edition of Schiller's 'Fridolin or the Road to the Iron Forge' - a ballad which the German poet Schiller 1759-1805 composed for a poetry competition against Goethe in 1797 with the text volume of the parallel German-English edition published in London by Bohte ‘foreign bookseller to his majesty’. The engravings by Moritz Retzsch 1779-1857 German painter and draughtsman were much praised: accompanied by the illustrations the ballad 'assumes a new and more exalted character' provided by Retzsch's ability to give them 'an airy dimness that softens what is beautiful and deepens all that is terrific' Monthly Review 1825 p.522.
