It was the outcome for a striving for comfort and innovation among the bourgeoisie of Germany and Austria who were laying the foundations for the industrial age in their countries and it was made by ordinary craftsmen living beyond the confines of the court. A major inspiration technical and artistic was England. Dr. Himmelheiber's book which was commissioned for the Furniture Monographs series is the first comprehensive treatment of the subject to appear in either English or German.
