4 volumes L'oeuvre complete. Hardbacks, 305x230mm, 544p,+ 544p + 528p +544p et 4500 colour illustrations, French edition . ISBN 9782915542608.
Hardcover with dusjacket 2 volumes / slipcase; complet.223+ 327 pages, Illustrated. fine condition. ISBN 9787872412511. Widely considered as the best assessment of modern Danish furniture available in English and are beautifully illustrated with historic photographs and new photographs of surviving pieces. Many of the photographs of some of the best pieces in museums and public buildings in Copenhagen appear to have been taken specifically for the book. Full-page photographs are set out facing reproductions of original presentation or technical drawings. Karlsen was an architect who worked with Mogens Koch, to whom the volumes are dedicated, and he approaches the subject through his hands-on experience as a furniture designer. The volumes provide a very readable and a very good broad chronological overview but what makes them invaluable is the addition of detailed and critical assessments of the most important and influential examples of chairs, tables and storage furniture produced through the century.
Fifth edition, considerably augmented by the addition of several new articles, receipts, &c., 12mo, xvi, 233, [1] + 12pp., of adverts, engraved frontispiece of the cabinet maker's workshop (lightly waterstained to lower margin), 4 engraved geometrical plates, cont. cloth-backed boards, slight tear, orig. printed title label to spine. "The rapid sale of Four Editions of this work has induced the Editor to offer to the public a Fifth which, from the many important additions made, he trusts will now form a complete pocket companion for the Cabinet Maker, as well as a necessary and useful addition to his tool- chest: and though the price is somewhat enhanced, from the plates and extra matter contained in it, still that will not be found, on a comparison with the former work, to be such as will put it out of the workman's power to avail himself of the benefits a book of general reference like the present is calculated to afford."?Advertisement.
