The first 60 pp. contain images of the company's specialty; fine reproductions of 18th century American furniture and the rest of the catalog are of their modern furniture."Over the course of nearly seven decades Charak Furniture Company produced exemplary reproductions of 18th-century-era furniture including works created in the American colonial and Georgian styles as well as sophisticated mid-century modern pieces made by the likes of German furniture designer and painter Tommi Parzinger. Charak was established in Boston Massachusetts in 1919. It earned a reputation for exceptional design and durability and the 1920s were a period of high production for the brand. Charak was a leading manufacturer of reproductions of early American furniture that was influenced by Queen Anne– and Georgian–era design including secretaries dressers and cabinets with exquisite details like accented moldings carved finials recessed door panels claw feet and other embellishments. While the Great Depression put many furniture manufacturers out of business Charak Furniture Company weathered the era’s difficulties. In fact during the 1930s it introduced one of its most enduringly popular dining tables: the drop leaf Danbury table. The solid mahogany table which features four leaves to comfortably accommodate larger dining parties as necessary is supported by four slender and elegantly curving legs a wonderful example of the company's furniture from this era." "Little is known about the life of the Parisian publisher of Le Garde-meuble Désiré Guilmard c. 1810-c.1885 except that he founded the publishing firm of D. Guilmard in 1839. Because his name appears as the "delineator" of the majority of the furniture plates in Le Garde-meuble many historians presumed he was a furniture designer. However he is not known to have had a furniture shop nor are there any signed examples of his furniture extant. We do know that Guilmard was closely connected to the Parisian design community and through his numerous publications see below became an influential purveyor of taste. He was also an exceptionally able businessman who promoted French furniture and design during a fifty-year period of rapidly changing taste" Smithsonian. D.Guilmard hardcover

196874182N.p.: N.p. ca. 1968. Modern working collection of over 100 original stencils tracings and hand painted samples of Federal furniture decorations. All laid in enveloped or taped into a modern three ring binder. These were used for furniture projects mainly chairs so signs of use are to be expected. A treasure trove for researchers and practitioners.Up until the 1840s stencils were widely used in America for walls and furniture. The use of stenciling declined as wallpaper became more economically viable as a decorative finish but it did not die out entirely. This collection dates from the 1960s and the designer perhaps named M. Robertshaw has taped in two pages of the catalog of stenciled American Federal furniture by Hitchcock Chair Company of Connecticut so it is likely he worked there. In 1818 Lambert Hitchcock founded an innovative chair company in the northwestern hills of Connecticut where he produced beautiful hand stenciled furniture. The company was ver successful and didn't close its doors in 2006 although it has recently been revived. N.p. unknown
