Andre Charles Boulle, 1642-1732 : un nouveau style pour l'Europe

This catalog was prepared to accompany an exhibition held at Museum fur Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt, from October 30, 2009 to January 31, 2010. Andre Charles Boulle (1642- 1732) became the most famous French cabinetmaker and the preeminent artist in the field of marquetry in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Initially discovered by Jean Baptiste Colbert, Boulle spent his life working for the Sun King, Louis XIV, and other French royals. 121 works in the exhibition, about 75 of these are pieces of furniture or decorative arts. Also drawings and paintings. Almost all these works illustrated in color, a few in black & white. Also a section on 20th century furniture influenced by Boulle. Son auteur, Andre Dubreuil, apres une carriere d'antiquaire et de peintre decorateur, a ete l'un des animateurs de la nouvelle creation anglaise au milieu des annees 80 avec Mark Brazier-Jones et Tom Dixon. Apres avoir manie le fer a beton en prestidigitateur, Dubreuil s'est confronte aux formes de la tradition pour leur donner une nouvelle vie. Un retour a la citation, a l'ornement, au ?« metier ?» qui s'est effectue sans etat d'ame : pour lui c'est l'invention qui compte avant tout. L'histoire des styles ne l'a jamais rattrape, car il ignore vers quoi, demain, son metier le menera, un metier qui a fait surgir au hasard des experimentations pres de 400 meubles-objets enigmatiques de 1985 a aujourd'hui, chaises, commodes, miroirs, cabinets, pendules, lanternes..., dans lesquels le reve, l'invention et le mystere l'emportent sur la fonction. Standard reference on André Groult (1884-1966), one of the finest of the French art deco furniture makers. He was born in the same generation as Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Andre Arbus, Jean-Michel Frank, among many others. In 1935, Groult designed the furnishings of the first-class cabins on the ocean liner SS Normandie. He became well known for his use of galuchat, a type of animal skin often taken from sharks. He exhibited an interior in the famous 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. Illustrated in color and black & white.
