First edition. Period boards. 8vo. 151 pages, 25 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates to Critical Evidence Against Wellhausen. Born in Hungary in 1843, Hoffmann was first a teacher and then rector of the Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin, succeeding Israel Hildesheimer, the Seminary's founder, in 1899. He wrote more than half a dozen books, and numerous essays and articles, some of which covered the Seminary. Among Hoffmans intellectual opponents was Julius Wellhausen, who first presented the possibility that the bible was written by numerous narrators. Hoffmann criticized Wellhausen on the grounds that his theory rested entirely on textual analysis while ignoring other disciplines such as archaeology. This book was published for this purpose. OCLC lists 7 copies worldwide with only one copy on the West Coast and abroad. Ex-library with usual markings. Minor wear to boards. Light staining. Overall Good Condition. (HEB-48-47)
