Album containing a preparatory study (probably also having an advertising or presentation purpose) for the film documentary `` Gli eroi dell'Artide '' by Luciano Emmer, later released in 1954 by Lualdi film, with photographs, maps and drawings also by hand, typewritten texts in English. Extremely rare and almost unobtainable.

The collection of 16 papers looks at themes such as the modes of interaction between polis and ruling powers, the construction of ethnic and social identity, interstate and civil conflict and its resolution, social economics, institutional processes and privileges, polis representations, ethics, and, not least, religious phenomena. The contributions range from "hard epigraphy" to sophisticated conceptual studies of aspects of the postclassical polis, and approach the inscriptions both as textual objects and as artefacts. The aim of this volume is to identify the postclassical polis both as a reality and as a constructed concept, not only a monolithic block, but a result of tension in the exercise of different kinds of powers. First edition. Period boards. 8vo. 151 pages, 25 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates to Critical Evidence Against Wellhausen. Born in Hungary in 1843, Hoffmann was first a teacher and then rector of the Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin, succeeding Israel Hildesheimer, the Seminary's founder, in 1899. He wrote more than half a dozen books, and numerous essays and articles, some of which covered the Seminary. Among Hoffmans intellectual opponents was Julius Wellhausen, who first presented the possibility that the bible was written by numerous narrators. Hoffmann criticized Wellhausen on the grounds that his theory rested entirely on textual analysis while ignoring other disciplines such as archaeology. This book was published for this purpose. OCLC lists 7 copies worldwide with only one copy on the West Coast and abroad. Ex-library with usual markings. Minor wear to boards. Light staining. Overall Good Condition. (HEB-48-47)
