/// ENGLISH: Sanjian Shuwu (三閒書屋) - Yinyu ji (引玉集, “Collection to Draw Forth Jade”): Fifty-Nine Woodcuts (木刻五十九幅) - Second printing, April 1935 - Octavo (19.5 × 15.5 cm), publisher's boards with black spine and mounted title label on upper cover - 68 pages - 59 collotype (珂羅版) reproductions of Soviet woodcuts printed from original impressions supplied by the artists - Includes a text by Chen Jie (陳節), an abridged translation of an essay by A. Chegodaev on contemporary Soviet printmaking - Limited edition of 215 copies, including 15 non-commercial presentation copies - Distributed by Uchiyama Bookstore (內山書店), Shanghai - Text in Chinese - Featuring works by Dmitri Isidorovich Mitrokhin, Alexei Kravchenko, Nikolai Piskarev, Vladimir Andreevich Favorsky, Pavel Pavlinov, Aleksandr Goncharov, Mikhail Pikov, Sergei Mikhailovich Mocharov, Leonid Khizhinsky, Nikolai Vasilievich Alekseev and Sergei Mikhailovich Pozharsky. ABOUT: Rare anthology devoted to modern Soviet wood engraving and printmaking, published in Shanghai by Sanjian Shuwu and distributed through Uchiyama Bookstore The volume gathers fifty-nine collotype reproductions of woodcuts by several leading figures of the Russian and Soviet printmaking revival of the 1920s and 1930s, including Vladimir Favorsky, Dmitri Mitrokhin, Alexei Kravchenko and Pavel Pavlinov. Accompanied by Chen Jie's abridged translation of an essay by Soviet art historian A. D. Chegodaev, as well as a preface, plate catalogue and postface, the work was conceived as an introduction to contemporary Soviet printmaking for Chinese readers. A remarkable testimony to Sino-Soviet artistic exchanges in Republican-era Shanghai, it belongs to the context of the New Woodcut Movement (新興木刻運動), then flourishing under the influence of left-wing intellectual circles and cultural networks associated with Uchiyama Bookstore and the figure of Lu Xun. The reproductions were assembled from Soviet books, periodicals and documentary sources discovered in the early 1930s, notably through the journal Graphika. Steel Service Corporation 1922. Atlas folio. 11 x 21 in. One illustrated broadside in red & black printed on thick paper card stock two illustrations reproduced from the company’s sales book by R.E. Gifford minor closed tears creasing & chipping to fore-edges but now neatly repaired and mounted on thick archival backing board of this VG- scarce survivor apparently used for reupholstering a chair in 1923 and discovered in 1970. First edition of this exceedingly scarce original theatre lobby poster for the now lost and largely forgotten 3 hour 10-reel documentary silent film released in 1922 shown for free in 50 different localities designed to generate leads for Steel’s stock selling scheme. Founded in 1919 the L.R. Steel Service Corp. was an early chain store competitor of Woolworth’s Kress and other similar stores growing quickly to 75 stores but largely focused on promoting profits generated by pulling in small local investors. Each of the different films after depicting not only a history of American retail 5¢ and 10¢ stores and the business history of the Steel family concluded with a view of his store in the locality where it was shown. Steel 1878-1923 was a Pennsylvania native Progressive Era thinker who placed women in executive positions hired African-Americans for advertising and sales jobs and even intended to develop Niagara Falls into a permanent World’s Fair. In 1923 the entire predecessor to the Enron-like scandal collapsed in a stock scandal Rambler died enroute to beg for a loan from Henry Ford to save his company and the films were all seemingly lost leaving 60000 investors out-of-pocket over $ 26 million. In effect more individual investors lost money in Steel’s scheme than in the much better-remembered Ponzi scandal. One copy of the original companion book written by R.E. Gifford with the same title still survives at Penn State but no copies of either film or broadside appear to have been retained. Cochems 1877-1954 the director of the film was a noted opera singer as well as advertising and film director for the L.R. Steel Corp. as well as twin brother to the famed American football player and coach Eddie Cochems 1877-1953 considered by many as the “father of the forward pass†in American football.
