Collection of 867 original keybook still photographs from the 1955 French film pasted on thick stock in three large quarto "Lavis aquarelle" brand spiral bound notebook with maroon faux leather front wrapper and a paper title label affixed to the front wrapper. Nearly all photos numbered in holograph ink inside a small white border on the recto and all numbered in mimeograph on the verso. One notebook full of photos crediting photographer Beauvarlet on the rectos. <br/><br/>Director Rene's first color film based largely on his childhood experiences. Winner of two important French film awards the Prix Louis-Delluc and the Prix Melies. Screened out-of-competition at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival. Still photographer Beauvarlet remains uncredited for the film perhaps overshadowed by the film's prolific cinematographer Robert Lefebvre. Beauvarlet stuck close to Bardot throughout her career snapping stills in "Her Bridal Night" 1956 "Naughty Girl" 1956 "La Parisienne" 1957 and "The Night Heaven Fell" 1958. His quick-draw style is amply captured here in candid images of the cast and crew a jovial celebrity signing and softer posed studio portraits. <br/><br/>Armand Philipe is a lieutenant in the French cavalry just before WWI a notorious womanizer and gambler who bets that he can seduce a woman in time for his company to being its summer maneuvers. The woman is Marie-Louise Morgan a divorcee who runs a milliner's shop and who is also being courted by Victor Desailly. The collection both predates and postdates November 1 1961 generally considered the original release. <br/><br/>A small invitation "for two" doubles as a folding RSVP for the October 17 showing at the Cyrano theatre in Villeneuve-sur-Lot a Southwest France commune with the Lot River running through the middle. The invitee's RSVP is unsigned. The two remaining pieces are from a slightly later November 15 1961 showing at the Gaumont-Palace in Nice in the Southeast of France the Riviera. A folding invitation stamped in blind with the theatre's coat of arms credits the president of the Societe Nouvelle des Etablissements Gaumont Jean Le Duc suggests formal wear and the invitee has inscribed in holograph blue ink in French "one chair." A large program accompanies printed by Havas for the Gaumont-Palace showing details film credits and synopsis greetings from the Gaumont and advertisements for businesses in Nice. Universal struck a deal with publishers Simon and Schuster in 1943 obtaining screen rights to their "Inner Sanctum" mysteries set to star Lon Chaney Jr. fresh off his classic monster roles and this film marked the first installment. Ben Pivar purchased freelance writer Edward Dein's original screenplay and selected Reginald Le Borg to direct. The film would set the standard for the series including the introductory sequence of a crystal ball gazer who warns the audience of impending albeit cinematic doom and the recurrent "stream of consciousness" voiceover. <br/><br/>Chaney is neurologist Mark Steele married to a beautiful and unfaithful wife Maria Ames. Distraught over his wife's infidelity he suffers a blackout only to wake up to interrogators Naish questioning him about his wife's murder. Chandler's contribution to the script had mostly to do with Alan Ladd's character and his tough dialogue elements sneered at by the media upon the film's release. Laid in is an 8-page shooting schedule on blue stock a 6-page revision to sequence "A" on yellow onionskin stock and 14 pages of "inter-office communication" on yellow studio stationery comments on scenes sequences and pages of the script. <br/><br/>Based on Rachel Field's 1942 novel about Emily Blair Loretta Young a wealthy deaf girl whose hometown is named for her family. Doctor Vance Ladd who grew up on the other side of town resents the Blair family but is working on a serum to cure deafness which he tries on Emily and she is eventually cured. <br/><br/>One of only five screenplays written by Chandler this being the second following his script for the classic "Double Indemnity" 1944 based on James M. Cain's novel. <br/><br/>Chandler had a tumultuous career in Hollywood including a suspension in late 1945 from Paramount for "refusing to perform under a contract which is not a proper expression of my standing in the motion picture business" but his influence on film adaptation is nearly unmatched with scripts and stories that pushed the limits of the Production Code Administration. <br/><br/>Script:<br/><br/>White self wrappers production No. SF 8577 dated December 3 1943 with credits for screenwriters Partos and Chandler.
