1972WRCLIT67253Culver City: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer 1972. 131 leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript printed on rectos only. Bradbound in studio wrappers. Working title added in pencil on upper wrapper and in ink on lower edge vertical crease in upper wrapper a handful of marginal spots and a few spots to lower wrapper still very good. A "revised draft" of the screenplay for this unproduced film in many ways evidently a return to Cain's novel THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE. Gordon Carroll is identified as the producer overseeing the project and was at the time involved as producer of Peckinpah's PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID. Although this project never came to fruition Giler and Carroll were associated with a number of future productions including films in the ALIEN series. The lead character's name in this version remains Frank Chambers but Cora and Nick Papadakis are renamed Sharon and Frank Flores. The setting is updated but the locale remains southern California. Unlike his earlier show which was set in the 1980s "Undeclared" was set in then-present of 1999. Apatow fought to include many of the actors from his earlier series but was only able to get the network to pick up Rogen as a regular cast member. He did however utilize many of the "Freaks and Geeks" actors as recurring characters or guest stars.<br/><br/>It's Steven's first day of college and his roommates organize a party to welcome him when Steven's dad shows up announcing he is getting divorced.<br/><br/>Green titled wrappers noted as FINAL SHOOTING DRAFT on the front wrapper dated 12/15/00 with credits for screenwriter Judd Apatow and director Jake Kasdan. Dialogue transcript for the unfinished film copy belonging to Frank Zappa circa 1968 with a single annotation in Zappa's hand in holograph ink of "Wednesday" on top of first page. A transcript of multiple takes of ten scenes shot by Zappa for his long aspired but never finished experimental film. Featuring scenes primarily between Don Preston and Phyllis Smith Altenhaus the transcript also contains dialogue from Zappa himself as well as Carl Zappa Billy Mundi Aynsley Dunbar and Jimmy Carl Black. The annotation of "Wednesday" likely refers to the day the sequences were shot or the day Zappa intended on editing the footage.<br/><br/>Full provenance available including letter stating transcript came from the estate of Zappa's longtime business manager Herb Cohen.<br/><br/>As early as 1967 Zappa had begun work on his infamous unfinished experimental film "Uncle Meat." Originally featuring his then band the Mothers of Invention as both musicians and fictional characters over the next decade the film would morph and change into various proposed incarnations by Zappa's apparently unbridled imagination but the project was always constrained by a lack of financing. Finally in 1987 a direct-to-video "making of" documentary of the uncompleted "Uncle Meat" production was released.<br/><br/>In 1969 the Mothers of Invention released the double album "Uncle Meat." Largely an instrumental soundtrack to the unfinished film the album was an unfocused but brilliant showcase for Zappa's compositional dexterity and a harbinger of his emergence as one of the most creatively fertile minds in rock music.<br/><br/>Transparent front wrapper with orange back wrapper and spine. 59 leaves with last page of text numbered 58. Archive of two scripts for the 2000 film including the shooting script with blue and pink revisions bound in and yellow revisions bound separately with the studio's production number rubber stamped randomly on the pages throughout. Copy belonging to Bruce Willis' stand-in Allen Strange with a detailed and nicely anecdotal typed letter signed providing provenance. With director Shyamalan's initials signing off on the script on the last leaf of the shooting script. <br/><br/>An interesting insight into a quiet auteur film that has become a cult favorite here evidenced as the result of some extreme editing. This early draft shows numerous differences between what Shyamalan shot and what made the finished film. Staneruck notes that "Many of the scenes that were shot which in my opinion were stunningly great were discarded after rewrites and lost in the editing . one incredible sequence that was cut shows . Bruce Willis in the shower naked.slowly overcome by emotion and breaks down crying." Staneruck also describes a very expensive shot of the train crash "which was on a 3 axis gimble with 20 stunt people falling about and dying violently. A Big Bucks scene.
