1971WRCLIT83424Los Angeles: Robert James de Maria 1971. 183pp. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript printed on rectos only. Punched and bound in unlettered stiff card binder. Title leaf pulled at top binder clasp otherwise very near fine. Through p. 38 a partial preliminary draft of the screenplay and from p. 39 to conclusion a treatment for an interesting but evidently unsuccessful effort to translate to the screen the historical story of "Juanita" of Downieville a Mexican-American woman who was accused of murder and lynched in Downieville California in July of 1851 -- the first and only known woman lynched in Gold Rush era California. Details of "Juanita's" life up to her death including her actual name remained sketchy in early historical accounts but research into her case in the mid 1970s by Martha Cotera established that her actual name was likely Josefa Segovia and that she was around 26 at the time of her lynching. The Anglo press of the time evidently referred to her as "Juanita" based on the stereotypical shorthand portrayal of Mexican women in the press. Chappel or occasionally "Chappell" is credited with the screenplay of at least one film that saw production the 1970 Richard Boone and Leslie Caron B-western MADRON as well as script work for such television shows as HAWAIIAN EYE and 26 MEN. The ultimate fate of this project is not indicated in the present material and thus can only be speculated upon. However given the controversial and sensational character of the subject as well as the vague and often contradictory historical accounts of the actual events it is just possible that studios had no appetite for handling such a highly-charged topic in this sensationalized fashion at a point in time when the Chicano Movement and the Chicana Feminist Movement were gathering momentum. 19681346061968. Autograph note signed from noted screenwriter Carl Foreman to producer Daniel Selznick executed on Foreman's production company stationery Open Road Films Limited in London. In the letter Foreman agrees to meet with Selznick to discuss a project Selznick is working on for Universal. Included are two photostat copies of related letters from Selznick to Foreman going into some detail about the proposed project. <br/><br/>Foreman is best known for having written the original screenplay for "High Noon" after which he was blacklisted by the HUAC and was forced to move to London where he remained for the most of the rest of his life. Subsequent to his move Foreman wrote a number of other notable screenplays including "The Sleeping Tiger" 1954 "The Bridge on the River Kwai" 1957 and "The Guns of Navarone" 1961. <br/><br/>Daniel Selznick the son of David O. Selznick is best known as a producer for films such as Peter Bogdanovich's "Targets" 1968 and various documentaries about Hollywood. His association with his father allowed him many opportunities to meet and correspond with numerous actors actresses and directors of note. <br/><br/>Note: 5 x 4 inches. Two development scripts undertaken for a film version of Hardy's novel which never came to fruition made up of the following: a A "Complete Script" of Scott's full screenplay 1244 leaves 12 July 1946 re-run 12 January 1947; and b an unspecified but revised of Scott's screenplay undated 1253 leaves in canary yellow printed Selznick Studio wrappers. Work on the film progressed to a point where an entirely different reworking of the script by Clemence Dane was undertaken but the project was canceled. Had it come to fruition this would have been the third film version of TESS after the now lost silent versions of 1913 and 1924. 1942130055Los Angeles: Selznick International 1942. Second Draft treatment script for an unproduced film "Two Against Tomorrow" with alternate titles "The Big Parade of 1942" "No Time for Tears" "12 Stolen Hours" and "Lover Come Back" also written on the front wrapper. One of a number of original scripts written by noted screenwriter and novelist Viertel for producer David O. Selznick in the early 1940s. We know of one earlier draft of the treatment dated simply "June 1942." This draft has added blue revision pages a distribution page and a date of June 18 1942. <br/><br/>Viertel's script went fairly far into the pre-production process. According to a New York Times article on August 19 1942 MGM purchased the property from Viertel who at the time was in the Marine Corps but more likely it was purchased from Selznick as this script dated June 1942 is clearly noted as a Selznick property. The article goes on to note that the picture was assigned MGM to producer Edgar Selwyn. <br/><br/>A story set in Manila told from the perspective of a woman working at a Filipino rubber factory during the first raids by the Japanese. With alternate titles likely suggested by Viertel proposed on the title page: "The Big Parade of 1942" "No Time for Tears" "12 Stolen Hours" and "Lover Come Back."<br/><br/>Pale blue titled wrappers dated June 18th 1942 with credits for Peter Viertel.
