In questo libro, che Susan Sontag ha definito «leggendario come ciò di cui parla», Kenneth Anger si è rivelato il primo adeguato chroniqueur, il più felice e amaro favolista del mondo di Hollywood. Con tocco sicuro, da grande maniaco del cinema, Anger ci fa constatare come gli scandali, i pettegolezzi, i suicidi, gli amori, le morti sospette, le perversità, i trionfi, i delitti e gli imbrogli avessero un altro colore a Hollywood: quei fatti sordidi e scintillanti andavano infatti subito a disporsi tra le vaste costellazioni dello star system, le loro oscurità nutrivano la luce irreale dello schermo. «Più stelle che in cielo» era un motto della Metro Goldwyn Mayer. Oggi, dopo decenni in cui lo star system è stato additato come macchina di depravazione commerciale e di svendita dell'arte al dollaro, cominciamo finalmente a intenderlo alla lettera: sistema di miti, orbite di astri, varianti e ripetizioni inesauribili di Storie e Figure Esemplari. In fondo, l'unico grande sistema mitologico che il nostro tempo abbia saputo offrirci. E, guidati da Kenneth Anger, qui ci avviciniamo al mito di Hollywood con lo spirito che gli è più congeniale: quello di Laforgue, dove la devozione si congiunge al sarcasmo e la parodia non si pone alla fine dei tempi ma alla loro origine. La Babilonia di gesso che Griffith fece costruire nel 1915 per accogliervi centinaia di comparse, e poco tempo dopo era un cimitero di relitti e di erbacce, è il luogo perenne del cinema, e da questo punto - soglia dell'Epoca dei Dubbi Splendori, quando Hollywood appariva a un osservatore attendibile come Aleister Crowley abitata da «una banda di maniaci sessuali pazzi di droga» - giustamente muove il racconto di Anger. Fatty e Hearst, Chaplin e Valentino, von Stroheim e Mae West, Errol Flynn e Marlene Dietrich, Lupe Velez e Robert Mitchum, Lana Turner e Judy Garland, e tanti nomi ormai sepolti, sfilano tutti davanti a noi, fra episodi atroci e dettagli oltraggiosi, in immagini della loro vita intima che si mescoleranno per sempre a quelle delle loro opere. Perché è appunto una caratteristica del sistema di Hollywood quella di essere onnivoro: tutto ciò che riguarda i suoi personaggi gli appartiene, tutto fa parte della sua scena, le gonnelline di Shirley Temple come l'epidemia di suicidi con il Seconal. Alla fine, si ha addirittura il sospetto che le ragioni commerciali stesse siano il pretesto per una grandiosa e involontaria applicazione dell'art pour l'art. Così, anche Hollywood Babilonia fa parte del cinema di Hollywood: al termine di queste pagine, dove il testo vive dentro le immagini e le immagini dentro il testo, dove nessun particolare è superfluo e tutti hanno un loro cupo smalto, come in un von Stroheim di ambiente californiano, potremmo dire di aver visto il cinema raccontare se stesso in un grande film nero.

Juni 1987 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien; eigentlich Frederick Austerlitz) war ein US-amerikanischer Tänzer, Choreograf, Sänger und Schauspieler. Seine Karriere in Film, Fernsehen und Theater umspannte insgesamt 76 Jahre. Gemeinsam mit Ginger Rogers bildete er in zehn Tanzfilmen ein weltbekanntes Leinwandpaar. Er gilt als prägende Gestalt in der Entwicklung des Tanz- und Musicalfilms. Besonders berühmt wurde er für seine Stepptanznummern. Fred Astaire wurde vom American Film Institute auf Platz 5 in der Liste der 25 größten männlichen Filmlegenden gewählt. ... Die Filmgesellschaft RKO Pictures nahm ihn 1933 unter Vertrag und lieh ihn zunächst für den Film Dancing Lady mit Joan Crawford und Clark Gable an MGM aus. Danach drehte RKO im selben Jahr mit ihm und Ginger Rogers in Nebenrollen den Film Flying Down to Rio, der Dolores del Río groß herausstellte, ein Erfolg an der Kinokasse wurde und den eigentlichen Durchbruch in Astaires Filmkarriere darstellte. Die positive Reaktion auf Flying Down to Rio war derart groß, dass Astaire und Rogers insgesamt neun weitere Filme zusammen drehten, in denen ihre Figuren sich nach anfänglicher Abneigung ineinander verlieben und gemeinsame Tanz- und Gesangsnummern durchführen. Astaire und Rogers schafften in den 1930er-Jahren den Sprung unter die zehn kassenträchtigsten Kinostars und sind bis heute das wohl bekannteste Tanzduo der Filmgeschichte. Die beiden sangen in ihren Filmen die Hits von populären Komponisten wie George Gershwin, Irving Berlin und Cole Porter. Astaire sang stets selbst und lehnte im Gegensatz zu vielen seiner Kollegen Stimm-Doubles und Nachsynchronisierungen konsequent ab. Er nahm auch zahlreiche Schallplatten auf.
