For this series of photos -- which the original typed blurb on the verso describes as "the feminine battle of the century" -- the ladies appear to give it the full action.</p><p>In image coded 1091-148 it is Paulette Goddard who has gotten the best of Rosalind Russell who sits and throws a tantrum on the ground. Mary Boland Norma Shearer and Joan Fontaine are a bit worse for the wear too. She appeared in a few films most memorably Ed Wood's <em>Plan 9 from Outer Space</em>.</p><p>This movie is a film noir although compromised by its pseudo "beatnik" milieu. Both photos are about fine with just a bit of handling to the edges. One marked 9315 shows a woman standing at a long table hand-assembling individual screenplays one page at a time. The description printed on the verso reads: “SCRIPT DEPARTMENT.Pictured is the mimeograph room where a girl is ‘picking up’ a complete screen play.†The other is marked 9344 and shows a woman typing at a small wooden desk with floor-to-ceiling shelves all around her each section packed with layers of printed material. The description on the verso reads: “SCRIPT DEPARTMENT.Pictured is the script file room where scripts manuscripts and production stills are catalogued for future use.†Both photos share the following text also on the verso reading in full: “M-G-M STUDIO GLAMOUR CAPITAL OF THE WORLD.Actually a city in itself with its nearly 5000 employees representing a total of 117 arts and crafts and 253 different skills it it located in the heart of Culver City which is surrounded by the city of Los Angeles. Its area has grown from its original 40 acres to 187 acres comprising six different lots. Lot 1 contains 195 buildings including offices 30 massive sound proof stages an industrial center dressing rooms commissary property department motion picture and still laboratory projection rooms music library and scores of other departments important to the making of motion pictures. 1960138668Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer 1960. Undetermined. very good. 81pp. Complete set of eight lobby cards and one sheet. Lobby cards measure 11 X 14 inches. One sheet lithograph measure 27 X 41 inches has minor edge tears and a few holes with professional restoration. Lobby cards have very small amount of colour offsetting mostly to verso else clean and bright. Uncommon to get lobby cards and poster together in reasonable condition. Lobby cards and one sheet made to promote the film adaptation of Jack Kerouac's novel. Despite being produced by a major movie studio and starring famous actors Leslie Caron and George Peppard the movie was a financial flop. Allen Ginsberg derided it for its two dimensional characters and shallow portrayal of the beat culture and this can be seen in the subtitles of the lobby cards such as "When the party's over and she's alone the wild Bohemian searches her soul for the answers" and "The new Bohemians took what they liked even if it was another fellow's girl.". 1960 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer unknown

Ben-Hur is a 1959 American epic historical drama film directed by William Wyler produced by Sam Zimbalist for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and starring Charlton Heston Stephen Boyd Jack Hawkins Hugh Griffith and Haya Harareet. A remake of the 1925 silent film with the same name Ben-Hur was adapted from Lew Wallace's 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. The screenplay is credited to Karl Tunberg but includes contributions from Maxwell Anderson S. N. Behrman Gore Vidal and Christopher Fry. Ben-Hur had the largest budget $15.175 million as well as the largest sets built of any film produced at the time. Costume designer Elizabeth Haffenden oversaw a staff of 100 wardrobe fabricators to make the costumes and a workshop employing 200 artists and workmen provided the hundreds of friezes and statues needed in the film. Filming commenced on May 18 1958 and wrapped on January 7 1959 with shooting lasting for 12 to 14 hours a day six days a week. Pre-production began at Cinecittà around October 1957 and post-production took six months. Under cinematographer Robert L. Surtees MGM executives made the decision to film the picture in a widescreen format which Wyler strongly disliked. More than 200 camels and 2500 horses were used in the shooting of the film with some 10000 extras. The sea battle was filmed using miniatures in a huge tank on the back lot at the MGM Studios in Culver City California. The nine-minute chariot race has become one of cinema's most famous sequences and the film score composed and conducted by Miklós Rózsa is the longest ever composed for a film and was highly influential on cinema for more than 15 years. Following a $14.7 million marketing effort Ben-Hur premiered at Loew's State Theatre in New York City on November 18 1959. It was the fastest-grossing as well as the highest grossing film of 1959 in the process becoming the second-highest grossing film in history at the time after Gone with the Wind. It won a record 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture Best Director Wyler Best Actor in a Leading Role Heston Best Actor in a Supporting Role Griffith and Best Cinematography Color Surtees an accomplishment that was not equaled until Titanic in 1997 and then again by The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in 2003. Ben-Hur also won three Golden Globe Awards including Best Motion Picture Drama Best Director and Best Supporting Actor Motion Picture for Stephen Boyd. Today Ben-Hur is widely considered to be one of the greatest films ever made and in 1998 the American Film Institute ranked it the 72nd best American film and the 2nd best American epic film in the AFI's 10 Top 10. In 2004 the National Film Preservation Board selected Ben-Hur for preservation by the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress for being a "culturally historically or aesthetically significant" motion picture. The Big Parade is a 1925 American silent film directed by King Vidor starring John Gilbert Renée Adorée Hobart Bosworth Tom O'Brien and Karl Dane. Adapted by Harry Behn from the autobiographical novel Plumes by Laurence Stallings with titles by Joseph W. Farnham the film is about an idle rich boy who joins the US Army's Rainbow Division and is sent to France to fight in World War I becomes a friend of two working class men experiences the horrors of trench warfare and finds love with a French girl. Although other anti-war films chronologically preceded it The Big Parade is nevertheless an early film to have neither glorified the war nor ignored its human costs. It heavily influenced a many subsequent war films especially All Quiet on the Western Front 1930. The Big Parade was selected for preservation in the U. S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally historically or aesthetically significant". The program states it was sold only in theaters. The Big Parade was one of the greatest hits of the 1920s earning gross rentals of $4990000 in the United States and $1141000 overseas on a budget of $382000 during its initial release with MGM recording a profit of $3.4 million its biggest of the silent era. The domestic earnings were MGM's biggest until the release of Gone With the Wind. It played in some larger cities continually for a year or more boosting Gilbert's career and made Renée Adorée a major star. The film ultimately grossed $18-$22 million in worldwide rentals and is sometimes proclaimed as the most successful film of the silent era although it is most likely this record falls to The Birth of a Nation. The film won the Photoplay Magazine Medal for best film of the year in 1925. The medal is considered the first significant annual movie award prior to the establishment of the Oscars. A young minister takes pity on her and they fall in love. Hester's husband has gone missing for several years and though the couple's love is forbidden they cannot help themselves. A baby is born and Hester is branded with a scarlet "A" for adulteress. The townspeople who condemn her are shocked when it is revealed who the father is.</p><p>A brilliant silent film perhaps the finest interpretation on film of this novel with script by Frances Marion costumes designed by Max Ree and set decoration by Cedric Gibbons and Sidney Ullman. Gish was perfectly cast as the demure yet sensual Hester one of her finest performances. She campaigned heavily to have the film made and won the battle against the studio and American civic morality groups to have it approved. Many of the locations were filmed at the Iverson Ranch in Chatsworth near Los Angeles.</p><p>In this rare behind-the-scenes moment we witness a tense exchange between Gish and director Victor Sjostrom. The filming was intense when Gish learned that her mother had a stroke in London and she needed to leave. The schedule was rearranged and two weeks of filming were completed in three days. One small repair on verso of blank upper right margin NEAR FINE.</p><p>Ramon Novarro was born in Durango Mexico. His family moved to Los Angeles in 1913 to flee from the Mexican Revolution. He entered silent films in 1917 first in bit parts. By the mid-1920's with the death of Valentino he was acclaimed as the screen's leading "Latin lover." His popularity waned by the mid-1930's when MGM did not renew his contract. Novarro was a closeted gay and he refused Mayer's request to enter into a sham so-called "lavender marriage" which was almost certainly one factor in the effective end of his career.</p><p>A posed portrait of Novarro and Alice Terry who had already made three films together including SCARAMOUCHE and were preparing to shoot a fourth one.</p> Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer books

Blue cardstock 4†x 2 1/2†with rounded corners and with “PRESS†printed in red. Studio passes were given to press and industry representatives allowing the bearer access to the studio’s lot and sets. It reads in full: “1938 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Corporation with their logo design To Publicity Department Only Name James Starr typed Newspaper Herald-Express typed Violation of the Requirements of this Pass Will Result In It’s Permanent Cancellation No. 680 Executive signed in ink This Pass Not Valid Unless Signed by the Holder on the Reverse Side.†On the verso is a printed set of basic terms regarding the holder of the pass and is signed by Jimmy Starr in ink as the recipient of the pass. About fine with the most minute trace of use.
