Mary Boland Norma Shearer and Joan Fontaine are a bit worse for the wear too. One of the most famous films of the 1930s with the wittiest of scripts and dialogue. F. Scott Fitzgerald contributed to the script based on Clare Booth Luce's Broadway play. Superb in every respect the film nonetheless was released during the most competitive year of superb film works and did not receive a single Academy nomination. Still labeled ""1091x174"" depicts the climatic final scene in which there is a major showdown amongst the film's main characters in a New York City nightclub ladies powder room. Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer were allowed to play out in character their dislike for each other in this scene. Queens of MGM their reign would be over in two years. Shearer would retire while Crawford re-invented herself and moved on to an entirely new film career. Rosalind Russell's career would flourish as she went onto starring roles in films for another 25 years while Paulette Goddard would have a leading lady reign throughout the 1940s. Others in the scene are Phyllis Povah Mary Boland and Florence Nash. Hedda Hopper not seen here also appeared in this scene. Adrian gowned all the actresses. This photo part of a series which told the plot of the film includes its original typed blurb on the verso and also features the Hollywood Advertising Council Approval stamp dated July 10 1939. Vampira was a 1950s horror hostess on local Los Angeles television. She appeared in a few films most memorably Ed Wood's <em>Plan 9 from Outer Space</em>.</p><p>This movie is a film noir although compromised by its pseudo "beatnik" milieu. 1960138668Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer 1960. Undetermined. very good. 81pp. Complete set of eight lobby cards and one sheet. Lobby cards measure 11 X 14 inches. One sheet lithograph measure 27 X 41 inches has minor edge tears and a few holes with professional restoration. Lobby cards have very small amount of colour offsetting mostly to verso else clean and bright. Uncommon to get lobby cards and poster together in reasonable condition. Lobby cards and one sheet made to promote the film adaptation of Jack Kerouac's novel. Despite being produced by a major movie studio and starring famous actors Leslie Caron and George Peppard the movie was a financial flop. Allen Ginsberg derided it for its two dimensional characters and shallow portrayal of the beat culture and this can be seen in the subtitles of the lobby cards such as "When the party's over and she's alone the wild Bohemian searches her soul for the answers" and "The new Bohemians took what they liked even if it was another fellow's girl.". 1960 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer unknown

Ben-Hur is a 1959 American epic historical drama film directed by William Wyler produced by Sam Zimbalist for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and starring Charlton Heston Stephen Boyd Jack Hawkins Hugh Griffith and Haya Harareet. A remake of the 1925 silent film with the same name Ben-Hur was adapted from Lew Wallace's 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. The screenplay is credited to Karl Tunberg but includes contributions from Maxwell Anderson S. N. Behrman Gore Vidal and Christopher Fry. Ben-Hur had the largest budget $15.175 million as well as the largest sets built of any film produced at the time. Costume designer Elizabeth Haffenden oversaw a staff of 100 wardrobe fabricators to make the costumes and a workshop employing 200 artists and workmen provided the hundreds of friezes and statues needed in the film. Filming commenced on May 18 1958 and wrapped on January 7 1959 with shooting lasting for 12 to 14 hours a day six days a week. Pre-production began at Cinecittà around October 1957 and post-production took six months. Under cinematographer Robert L. Surtees MGM executives made the decision to film the picture in a widescreen format which Wyler strongly disliked. More than 200 camels and 2500 horses were used in the shooting of the film with some 10000 extras. The sea battle was filmed using miniatures in a huge tank on the back lot at the MGM Studios in Culver City California. The nine-minute chariot race has become one of cinema's most famous sequences and the film score composed and conducted by Miklós Rózsa is the longest ever composed for a film and was highly influential on cinema for more than 15 years. Following a $14.7 million marketing effort Ben-Hur premiered at Loew's State Theatre in New York City on November 18 1959. It was the fastest-grossing as well as the highest grossing film of 1959 in the process becoming the second-highest grossing film in history at the time after Gone with the Wind. It won a record 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture Best Director Wyler Best Actor in a Leading Role Heston Best Actor in a Supporting Role Griffith and Best Cinematography Color Surtees an accomplishment that was not equaled until Titanic in 1997 and then again by The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in 2003. Ben-Hur also won three Golden Globe Awards including Best Motion Picture Drama Best Director and Best Supporting Actor Motion Picture for Stephen Boyd. Today Ben-Hur is widely considered to be one of the greatest films ever made and in 1998 the American Film Institute ranked it the 72nd best American film and the 2nd best American epic film in the AFI's 10 Top 10. In 2004 the National Film Preservation Board selected Ben-Hur for preservation by the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress for being a "culturally historically or aesthetically significant" motion picture. This is in English and French with English French and Spanish subtitles. This movie starred Shirley Jones Glenn Ford Stella Stevens Dina Merrill Roberta Sherwood Ron Howard and Jerry Van Dyke. It was directed by Vincent Minnelli. Shirley Jones starred in the film versions of the hit musicals Oklahoma 1955 Carousel 1956 and The Music Man 1962. She earned a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for playing quite contrary to her wholesome image an angry prostitute in Elmer Gantry 1969. Jones is best known to television audiences as Shirley Partridge the matriarch on the popular musical sitcom The Partridge Family 1970-1974 whose cast included her stepson David Cassidy in 2004 Jones hosted a reality TV program to select a cast for a new Partridge Family pilot. Jones was married to her first husband Jack Cassidy from 1956 until their divorce in 1974; their sons Shaun Patrick and Ryan all became entertainers. She has been married to comedian/actor Marty Ingels. The Courtship of Eddie's Father is a 1963 American Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer romantic comedy film directed by Vincente Minnelli and stars Glenn Ford as a widowed father and Ronny Howard as his caring son. The film was based on a 1961 novel by Mark Toby as was the ABC-TV series of the same name with Bill Bixby and Brandon Cruz which ran from 1969 to 1972. Young Eddie Corbett Ronny Howard tries his best to be a matchmaker for his widowed father Tom Glenn Ford a radio station executive. At first sexy Dollye Daly Stella Stevens seems promising but she ends up falling in love with and marrying Norman Jones Jerry Van Dyke Tom's friend and colleague. Tom becomes attracted to a sophisticated socialite Rita Behrens Dina Merrill. They begin considering marriage but Eddie takes an immediate dislike to Rita and she does not know how to deal with him nor does she particularly wish to learn and Tom eventually chooses his son over her. Through all this the Corbetts are supported by their new housekeeper Mrs. Livingston Roberta Sherwood and by their divorced next-door neighbor Elizabeth Marten Shirley Jones. It takes a crisis for Tom to realize what has been under his nose all along. Film rights to the novel were bought by MGM prior to publication for $100000 in 1961. The Chicago Tribune called the novel "deeply moving and at the same time very funny." Producer Joe Pasternak assigned John Gay to write the script and hired Glenn Ford to star. Shirley Jones accepted her role in part because she did not have to sing. Roberta Sherwood a nightclub singer and TV entertainer made her film debut. Pasternak says he interviewed hundreds of children to play Eddie but as soon as he talked to Ronny Howard "I knew he was right." The bowling alley sequence was filmed at the now-defunct Paradise Bowl located at 9116 South Sepulveda Boulevard in Los Angeles two miles north of LAX. The Big Parade is a 1925 American silent film directed by King Vidor starring John Gilbert Renée Adorée Hobart Bosworth Tom O'Brien and Karl Dane. Adapted by Harry Behn from the autobiographical novel Plumes by Laurence Stallings with titles by Joseph W. Farnham the film is about an idle rich boy who joins the US Army's Rainbow Division and is sent to France to fight in World War I becomes a friend of two working class men experiences the horrors of trench warfare and finds love with a French girl. Although other anti-war films chronologically preceded it The Big Parade is nevertheless an early film to have neither glorified the war nor ignored its human costs. It heavily influenced a many subsequent war films especially All Quiet on the Western Front 1930. The Big Parade was selected for preservation in the U. S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally historically or aesthetically significant". The program states it was sold only in theaters. The Big Parade was one of the greatest hits of the 1920s earning gross rentals of $4990000 in the United States and $1141000 overseas on a budget of $382000 during its initial release with MGM recording a profit of $3.4 million its biggest of the silent era. The domestic earnings were MGM's biggest until the release of Gone With the Wind. It played in some larger cities continually for a year or more boosting Gilbert's career and made Renée Adorée a major star. The film ultimately grossed $18-$22 million in worldwide rentals and is sometimes proclaimed as the most successful film of the silent era although it is most likely this record falls to The Birth of a Nation. The film won the Photoplay Magazine Medal for best film of the year in 1925. The medal is considered the first significant annual movie award prior to the establishment of the Oscars.
