The film starring Humphrey Bogart won three Academy Awards.<br /> <br /> First American Edition Second printing. An important piece of Hollywood history. "WB 1122" Warner Bros written in white ink near the base of the spine. "IMPORTANT! RETURN Story Dept." stamped on the front free end page. This book was used for John Huston's 1948 film adaptation which became one of Warner Bros' most enduring classic films. Penciled in the upper left hand corner of the front free end page are the names of two Hollywood executives Henry Blanke who produced the film and Vincent Sherman who directed the film. The names were written when they checked out the book from the vault and upon return the name and date was crossed out. Henry Blanke was one of the film's producers and Vincent Sherman directed the film. Near fine condition. No dustjacket. This book represents the starting point in the chain of events that turned this outstanding novel into one of the most important movies of Hollywood's Golden Age. Director John Huston first read the novel by B. Traven in 1935 and had always thought the material would make a great movie with his father in the main role. Based on a 19th-century ballad by a German poet Traven's book reminded Huston of his own adventures in the Mexican cavalry. B. Traven was the pen name of a presumably novelist whose real name nationality date and place of birth and details of biography are all still subject to dispute. One of the few certainties about Traven's life is that he lived for years in Mexico where the majority of his fiction is also set including The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. unknown

The original manuscript with numerous added items presented by author James Warner Bellah to The original manuscript with numerous added items presented by author James Warner Bellah to his friend Charles Benton. Contemporary glazed cloth boards titles stamped in gilt on front cover and spine 48 2 48 10 pp. largely rectos only. James Warner Bellah was a veteran of both World War I and World War II and a popular western author during the 1930s through the 1950s. He wrote numerous books and stories centering on cavalry and Indians largely pulp fiction published in periodicals and paperbacks and occasionally serialized in more respectable outlets such as the Saturday Evening Post. The present work is comprised of Bellah’s handwritten manuscript with numerous holographic corrections emendations and paste-overs the typescript with a few holographic corrections and the published version of the short story extracted from the magazine bound together in that order. The recipient Charles Benton presumably bound the manuscript typescript and magazine text together at a later date. The story is titled “Thirty Nine Days to Glory” and concerns the “real story of Custer’s Last Fight” according to the subtitle added to the final printed version which appeared in the September 1959 issue of Holiday magazine. Bellah presented each item to Benton separately each time including a presentation inscription; the inscription on the manuscript is dated Aug. 24 1957 the others undated. Bellah included a signed note also bound in when he transmitted the manuscript to Benton that carries some importance for Bellah scholars as he writes: “This is only one of two original manuscripts of mine that I have not burned as a matter of routine after they were typed. The other is that of ‘The Valiant Virginians’ which was requested by and is now on permanent exhibit at the Columbia University Library in New York. Who knows . you may ultimately have a fortune." An excellent literary item for the western collector and the only obtainable Bellah manuscript in the world. Several of Bellah's stories were adapted to film including three by director John Ford: "Fort Apache" "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and "Rio Grande." Bellah also co-wrote the screenplays for "The Sea Chase" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" and wrote for television throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Light wear to head of spine and corners else a very good copy of an excellent literary item for the western collector and the only obtainable Bellah manuscript in the world. 19418123London: John Lane / Bodley Head. London John Lane / Bodley Head 1941. Proof. Paperback. A very good copy. Included in Anthony Burgess's list of Ninety-Nine Novels. In the introduction Burgess recounts how he read a copy returning from the war and was struck by it's being Kafkaesque yet incorporating the three-dimensional characters more associated with English literature. He also notes that its claim to 'be regarded as a modern classic is as sound as that of Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four' though less obvious given its subtlety. Less obvious too than his earlier Wild Goose Chase. A quintessentially English dystopia perhaps it wouldn't be amiss to call it a cosy dystopia akin to the cosy catastrophes of the subsequent decade. The dystopia in question being the aerodrome itself and the local environs. A smaller scale affair than Orwell's and most that come thereafter. An important book undervalued in the current day but welcome to sit on a shelf alongside Orwell Kafka Zamyatin and Huxley in the great early dystopias. Clute & Nicholls p1299 & Burgess p132. Bolt b. 1901 was chairman of the Farnham Constituency Labour Party and stood for Huddersfield West in 1950 and 1951. "This strikingly original work made an immediate impression. His tale of three brothers and their quest in an unnamed country for the wild goose symbol of hope and personal regeneration was rightly seen as akin to the work of Franz Kafka; but it drew also on elements of classical mythology and even of fairy tale in a manner genuinely new in English fiction" ODNB. Poole praises: ".the four stately volumes in large quarto now before us. No catalogue of any great library has ever been attempted on such a scale and certainly none can rival it in the completeness of its scholarship or the perfection of its work in detail. .The technical finish of the book is incomparable and the printers have co-operated in making it a splendid production. It is printed with wonderful accuracy in a noble type; the paper is excellent and the volumes are uncommonly easy to use. The catalogue of the Royal manuscripts occupies the first two volumes. The third contains a description of the King's manuscripts ; this collection inconveniently named forms part of the fine library of George III which was presented to the nation by George IV. That library is famous for its printed books but the 446 manuscripts in it comprise few of remarkable interest. Most of the volume is taken up by two indexes which call for special admiration. The general index is drawn up with extraordinary completeness. .The second index is of initia or incipits in various languages. The compilers say that ' the Royal collection includes so much of the common stock of a medieval library that the Latin index will it is hoped be found useful by many who may wish to identify unnamed treatises'. This is too modest an aspiration : the index covers so much longer a range of centuries than those of Vattasso and Little that it must at once rank as an indispensable work of reference for students of manuscripts. The fourth volume consists of a series of 125 plates giving beautifully reproduced facsimiles from 144 manuscripts of which two-thirds were written or probably written in England.The volume is an important contribution to palaeography.". From the introduction to the work: "The volume of plates fortunately prepared before the war forms a special feature of the Catalogue which it is hoped will be welcome both to palaeographers and to students of art. The 125 plates include representations of 99 manuscripts written or probably written in England and since nearly 50 of these are illuminated they serve to give a good idea of English mediaeval art the great merits of which are often ignored. French art which alone can rival it is well though not fully represented by 26 plates of which 24 are illuminated : Flemish and Italian work are less adequately represented. Four plates are devoted to handwritings of the 16th and 17th centuries and two to examples of the autographs of well-known scholars. A chronological table enables the student to follow the course of palaeographical and artistic development. A set formerly owned by C H St John Hornby founder of the Ashendene Press and noted collector of manuscripts with his red and black bookplate on the front pastedown endpapers.
