First UK edition published the same year as the US edition. Bound in the publisher's original cloth. Written by American author Susan B. Warner who was best known for her works of religious fiction and children's fiction. This novel is set in and around Warner's home state of New York with the 'Shatemuc' river being one of the original names of the Hudson River. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally sound with slight rubbing and bumping particularly to the extremities. Small tears to the cloth at the joints at the head and tail of the spine. Spine is a touch faded. Boards are slightly soiled. Hinges are strained with the front hinge tender cords visible. Lacking front free endpaper. Internally generally firmly bound. Leather on spine is peeled raw and gilded lettering is partially worn away. Spine ends are chipped and soiled. Despite loose front board binding is still good. Page edges have extensive dark staining pitting and soiling. First two pages have irregularly chipped edges and some small torn holes. Pastedowns have scribbled marks and dark spot stains. There is also considerable foxing throughout the pages but none so bad as to render the text unreadable. 576 pages of text illustrated with a frontispiece and throughout the text with line drawings and wood cut engravings by the author. A scarce first edition of this interesting and in-depth discussion into the history of the city of Bath in England illustrated throughout including with one folding map. The first edition of this work. A scarce work. Illustrated with a frontispiece one folding map and twelve plates. Collated from Copac from a copy held at Oxford University bound without one plate. Bound without pages 101-123 of the appendix. With a half-title. This work is a quarto. Collated incomplete bound without one black and pages 101-123 of the appendix. An interesting and in-depth history of the city of Bath in England. The city was a popular social hub at the time of this publication. The hot springs and waters of the Roman Baths in the city centre were a source of popularity with people visiting the city to taste the waters which had supposed healing properties. Bath is also rich with ancient Roman and Saxon history the city being names Aquae Sulis in the Roman era. both of which are discussed in detail in this work. However the author also discussed the civil history and the military history of the city and offers a concise history of the Bath Abbey alongside chapters on the public baths the mineralogy and botany of the city and the various amusements that could be found in Bath at the turn of the nineteenth century. The work was dedicated to George IV when he was the Prince of Wales. Written by Richard Warner an antiquary who specialised in topography. He was also a clergyman and came to bath as a minister at All Saints in 1794. His move to Bath inspired his interest in the Roman history and antiquity of the city. It seems that Warner had a slightly contentious view of the society of Bath believing that the city was disintegrating into corruption and relaxation. A scarce first edition of Richard Warner's illustrated history of Bath. In a half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally generally smart. Light rubbing to the boards and spine.
