The business was established in 1860 in New York by Wyllys H. Warner and passed under the control of Bates and Johnson in 1880. The company's self-feeding boiler was patented in February of 1883 and later that same year was installed as part of its steam-heating system in the iconic Manhattan Company and Merchants' Bank Building on Wall Street.
