Limited to five hundred copies. Originally published in 1870 this novella draws themes like female dominance and sadomasochism and character inspiration heavily from Sacher-Masoch's own life. The story concerns a man who dreams of speaking to Venus about love while she wears furs. Written by Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch an Austrian nobleman writer and journalist who gained renown for his romantic stories of Galician life. The term masochism is derived from his name although he did not approve of this use. Translated by George Warner an English translator. In the original full cloth binding. Externally very smart with minor rubbing to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Front hinge starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. The Venona project was a United States counterintelligence program initiated during World War II by the United States Army's Signal Intelligence Service later absorbed by the National Security Agency which ran from February 1 1943 until October 1 1980. It was intended to decrypt messages transmitted by the intelligence agencies of the Soviet Union e.g. the NKVD the KGB and the GRU. Initiated when the Soviet Union was an ally of the US the program continued during the Cold War when it was considered an enemy.
