Albertype sepia-tinted lithographs from photographs and original drawings including double-page â€œBirds Eye View of Portland & Vicinityâ€ a few folds neatly repaired minor age toning some slight edgewear minor closed tear head of spine old reinforcement on verso of spine still a VG- copy w/ publisherâ€™s advertising label mounted on rear pastedown booksellerâ€™s stamp for Eli Sherwin Denison General Newsagent Southern Pacific Company Portland OR. First edition of this very scarce original view book issued by one of the most dominant travel souvenir publisherâ€™s in 19th-Century California and the West C.P. Heininger. Not only did they publish and sell view books photo albums and guidebooks but also created business cards walking canes and novelties made from Redwood and Redwood tree bark. This souvenir view bookâ€™s Birds-Eye fiew of Portland focused on the Willamette River looking South with western downtown Portland and docks on right-hand side of image while East Portland and Albina appear to the left-hand of the image capturing the railroad shops and grain elevator. Of additional interest are the included views of the North Pacific Exposition Building constructed in Goose Hollow on Burnside in 1888 serving as the venue for the annual Industrial Exposition flower shows and athletic field which later evolved into the Multnomah Stadium and was destroyed in a 1910 fire. Heininger 1857-1943 first established his souvenir lithograph printing offices sometime in 1885 and would continue selling novelties and printed view books until 1924-1927. Denison 1827-1898 was a longtime General Newsagent for the Central Pacific & Union Pacific Line and in 1869 developed his business under the Southern Pacific where he remained until the end of 1890 when he set up his own line The Laundry Farm Railroad. DEED CONVEYING "SUFFERERS' LAND" IN THE OHIO WESTERN RESERVE FROM CONNECTICUT RESIDENTS JOSEPH AND MARY PERKINS TO CHARLES PERKINS OF ROCHESTER NEW YORK 22 APRIL 1829

182935388Norwich CT 1829. Folio 9-1/4" x 15-1/4". Printed broadsheet completed in ink manuscript. Signed and sealed with paper and wax seals by Joseph and Mary Perkins; witnessed by Thomas Jackson Jnr. and Mary W. Perkins as witnesses. Signed on verso by Erastus Coit as Justice of the Peace and by Harvey R. Garland as Recorder received on June 4 1832 and recorded July 15 1832. Light age toning old folds a few very light ink stains on verso. Minimal edgewear with a few pinholes at fold corners. Very Good. In 1800 the State of Connecticut granted to her citizens who were sufferers by fire caused by the British during the Revolutionary War a half million acres of land lying within the State of Ohio which was to be taken off the west part of the "Western Connecticut Reserve" now embraced in the counties of Huron and Erie. By an 1803 Act of Ohio the sufferers were incorporated as "The proprietors of the half million acres of land lying south of Lake Erie called 'Sufferers' Land'." The Act required management of the Company by a Board of Directors. The Board was to locate and survey the granted land and to partition it among the different claimants. This part of the Western Reserve was inhabited by Indians who engaged in warfare with the settlers. On July 4 1805 a treaty between the United States and the Wyandot Ottawa Chippewa Munsee and Delaware Shawanee and Pattawatamy nations was signed whereby those Indian nations in consideration of $18916.68 released their claims to all the lands owned by the company. The parties of this deed are likely related to Gen. Simon Perkins also from New London County Connecticut. He was a surveyor of the Connecticut Western Reserve the first postmaster of the Reserve a founder of the Western Reserve Bank of Warren a Brigadier General in the War of 1812 defending northwestern Ohio and one of the largest land owners in the state of Ohio. The extended Perkins family lived and owned property in Connecticut and the Reserve. Erastus Coit was a well known merchant a Norwich justice of the peace and served as Connecticut's State Representative of Norwich in 1818 and 1820. unknown books

Very slight paper imperfections along edge. Minor tear near upper left corner. Very minor tear to map above the Arctic Circle. Published in the Illustrated Atlas And Modern History Of The World Geographical Political Commercial & Statistical Edited By R. Montgomery Martin. Beautifully bordered and fascinating map of the western hemisphere including North and South America. The Azores and Cape Verde islands and the Caribbean islands are included in the Atlantic Ocean. In the south South Shetland Islands and South Victoria populate a blank area where the Antarctic ought to be found. In the Pacific New Zealand and the Polynesian and Sandwich Hawaiian islands. To the north the end of Asia can be seen and across the Arctic Ocean Greenland is also included. The political divisions are colourfully delineated. Interestingly Alaska is described as 'Russian America' highlighting that the U.S. had still to purchase "Seward's Icebox" from the Tsar when the map was published. John Tallis 7 November 1817 3 June 1876 was an English cartographic publisher. His company John Tallis and Company published views maps and atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851. Tallis set up as a publisher with Frederick Tallis in Cripplegate in 1842; the business moved to Smithfield in 1846 and was dissolved in 1849. From 1851 to 1854 Tallis operated as John Tallis and Company. He started The illustrated news of the world and national portrait gallery of eminent personages in 1858 selling it for £1370 in 1861; it folded in 1863. Wikipedia The most important project John Tallis undertook was the 'Illustrated Atlas' from 1851. The original map we offer here was part of this exceptional Atlas and all the maps it contained are still today considered as the last reminder of an era of lavish map production. Tallis worked the project together with John Rapkin 1815-1876 and it was Rapkin's style and talent that we have to thank for when we marvel at these maps today. What makes these maps so special is the detail of engraved vignettes that surround the map and often show indigenous scenes people in their environment and even more so historical buildings or historical views of towns and cities architecture and landscape. The project of 'The Illustrated Atlas' was designed to be finished just in time for the anxiously awaited "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations" or The Great Exhibition sometimes referred to as the Crystal Palace Exhibition in reference to the temporary structure in which it was held was an international exhibition that took place in Hyde Park London from 1 May to 11 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World's Fairs exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the 19th century and it was a much-anticipated event. The Great Exhibition was organized by Henry Cole and Prince Albert husband of the reigning monarch Queen Victoria. It was attended by numerous notable figures of the time including Charles Darwin Samuel Colt members of the Orléanist Royal Family and the writers Charlotte Brontë Charles Dickens Lewis Carroll George Eliot and Alfred Tennyson. Music for the opening was under the direction of Sir George Thomas Smart and the continuous music from the exhibited organs for the Queen's procession was "under the superintendence of William Sterndale Bennett". Delightful Group Portrait of Young Women in a Charming Tableau Vivant

Original gelatin silver photograph measuring 13.25" x 10.5" mounted on its original heavy card-stock frame to an overall size of 13.75" x 10.75". An utterly charming and highly uncommon group portrait capturing ninteen young women dressed uniformly in flowing white gowns some adorned with sashes and bows. In contrast to the often rigid and sombre studio portraits typical of the period the image is remarkable for the subjects' relaxed candid and cheerful poses and expressions. Their choice of attire - resembling Victorian lingerie dresses - strongly suggests the group was gathered for a specific collective event such as a tableau vivant a theatrical production a society pageant or perhaps a graduation ceremony. Bears the stylized imprint of the prominent Western photography firm "Genelli" to the lower-left margin alongside a full studio stamp to the verso reading "Genelli 122 North Main St. Butte Montana." accompanied with a contemporary manuscript ink annotation also to the verso which suggests the era "about 1895" a location of provenance "Portage la Prairie" and a subject "Aunt Frank"'. Captured and produced by the American photography firm Genelli Studio a prestigious high-end franchise known for their artistic portraiture sophisticated lighting techniques and use of elaborate theatrical backdrops beautifully exemplified by the rich drapery and wainscoting apparent in the background of this lovely image. Exceptionally well-preserved retaining excellent clarity sharp focus and tonal range showing only but minor typical silvering to the darker areas and a few largely unobtrusive minor spots to the centre; Original mount remains sound showing some moderate edgewear slight rounding and minor delamination to the corners.
