'Savesing Bank' Dear Sir: This Association has been formed for purposes set forth in a Circular which we enclose to you. We ask your attention to the benevolent objects therein contemplated and your aid in favor of the enterprise by disposing of Certificates of the Association at One Dollar each which well entitle the holder of each Certificate to a gift varying in value from fifty cents to FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. This Association will allow you TWELVE certificates for TEN DOLLARS sent to them at Cincinnati and in that proportion. We enclose herin '6' Cerificates. Address all Letters and Orders to B. W. Grinnell & Co. Cincinnati Ohio. P.S. Please write out in full the name of each person holding Certificates with the name of the Post Office County and State." Words enclosed in single parenthesis are handwritten. Referenced in the document and included is a full uncut sheet of five 5 "Certificates" and another single 1 Certificate totalling six Certificates. These are printed in red and black and are hand-numbered '830 831 832 833 834 827' and read 'Western Emigrating Aid Association This Certificate entitles the Holder to a Gift varying in value from Fifty cents to Five thousand Dollars. Cincinnati Ohio.' Signed in facsimile "B. W. Grinnell Co." and decorated with the amount '100000' superimposed in large outline numerals. In part: "Despatches to Generals Sherman and Sheridan which show that the first reports were only too true - an intimation that Custer sacrificed himself and his command by blundering hardihood. The name Custer is a household word. It was marked deep on the hearts of our people during the brightest and darkest hours of the late rebellion. Custer fell- fell at the head of his command; fell where Death's sickle cut close and sure; fell and around him were gathered the gallant men of his commend who illustrated their bravery a full appreciation of Espirit du corps and amor patria." There are 10 steel engraved full-page plates of New York towns and views and a brief sketch of all of the towns along the route to Oswego. An interesting advertisements promotes farms for sale priced from $15.00 to $40.00 an acre. A long list of hotels boarding houses and private families on or near the route of the New York Ontario and Western Railway is provided. 188327755Perth: Goverment Printer 1883. Robert Fairbairn the prominent 19th century Western Australian magistrate is the appointee to whom this "Minute" is aimed. He would soon be in charge of the Kimberley district and Wrenfordsley was at the time of this writing the Acting Governor of Western Australia. Unusually this is not recorded on either Trove or the State Library of Western Australia. <br /> <br /> The "minute" advises Mr. Fairbairn on his duties which will involve ".those of the Judge the Collector of Customs and the Registrar". and he advises "the Magistrate to take his own notes of the evidence and not to trust to his clerk." It is most interesting for the directions of caution in meting out punishment to the aboriginal community. "As the dispenser of justice to an uncivilised race it is all important that he should appear to act with judicial calmness and deliberation." Settlers were to be discouraged from taking the law into their own hands. And the statues prohibiting the supply of liquor to natives were to be strictly enforced so that "in the remote and . peaceful wilds of the Kimberley country the white man's curse will long remain unknown." An early reader has commented at the top "This is good" and has also highlighted various sections of interest. <br /> <br /> At the time of this writing Wrenfordsley was Acting Governor of Western Australia however he had a long career in law as solicitor Attorney General of Jamaica Chief Justice of Western Australia and Chief Justice of Fiji. <br /> <br /> Foolscap folio 3pp black text on cream paper. At the end of page printed H.T. Wrenfordsley Administrator. 13-3-83." A notation on verso in ink "Notes of Wrenfordsley on Justice duties."
