Non tutto andò per il verso giusto, e Ramsay MacKay (Joel McCrea), ideatore dell'impresa, dovette risolvere più di un problema.Il film racconta la saga della Wells Fargo, la ditta di trasporti con diligenze che per prima stabilì un collegamento fra la costa atlantica e il Pacifico. L'azione copre circa trent'anni, dalla febbre dell'oro in California fino alla chiusura della frontiera del West. Western di stampo classico e dal taglio introspettivo che si prefigge di riflettere sulla conquista territoriale come sfida personale. Girato con dovizia di dettagli e una notevole ricostruzione storica, "Un mondo che sorge" non riesce a staccarsi da una certa esaltazione nazionalista che lo rende un inno al patriottismo americano. Il regista lavora su stereotipi e poco sulla personalità dei suoi personaggi, che risultano privi di sfumature e omologati gli uni agli altri. Film ottimo dal punto di vista produttivo ma carente sul piano dei contenuti. .
