Considered one of the country's leading authorities on the diffusion of the horse among the Indian tribes of North America, on the Appaloosa horse, and on the Nez Perce, he was the author of The Buffalo and Red Eagles of the Northwest (google books 2018) The history and background of the Nez Perce war, and a great leader, Chief Joseph, whose story so stirred the country fifty years ago. But this book is of much more than a bitter and hopeless struggle for independence; it is a study of the ever-shifting line of conflict between two civilizations- on one hand the sturdy and closely-knit culture of the Nez Perces, on the other hand the many-sided, constantly advancing front of white civilization. With the publisher's printed slip advising of possible wartime restrictions mounted on half-title. Published in GWR's much sought-after 'Rambles ' series, with evocative illustrations by Charles H J Mayo and delightful flat-colour wrapper artwork after the style of Brian Cook. The author was secretary of the North Finchley Rambling Club and a great champion of the traditional rights of walkers over field paths. He co-authored the series with E Roland Williams and undertook personally all routes described. IN THIS CONDITION, A RARE SURVIVAL.
