La sua opera di architetto, di teorico, di organizzatore e direttore di quell'ammirevole scuola d'arte che fu la Bauhaus è inseparabile dalla condizione storica della repubblica di Weimar e della fragile democrazia tedesca. La sua razionalità, la sua positività, il suo stesso ottimismo nel disegnare programmi di ricostruzione sociale brillano sullo sfondo buio della sconfitta tedesca e dell'angoscia del dopoguerra: la sua fede in un avvenire migliore del mondo nasconde uno scetticismo profondo, una lucida disperazione. Non era soltanto una difesa psicologica e morale: quel supremo prestigio della ragione era anche l'ultima eredità della grande cultura tedesca, l'unica forza di riscatto che la Germania potesse attingere dal proprio passato. L'opera di Gropius s'inquadra nella crisi dei grandi ideali, che caratterizza la cultura tedesca del XX secolo; nasce anch'essa dalla disgregazione dei grandi sistemi e dalla fiducia riposta in una critica costruttiva, capace di porre e risolvere i problemi immediati dell'esistenza. La razionalità che Gropius sviluppa nei processi formali dell'arte è affine alla dialettica della filosofia fenomenologica ed esistenziale (soprattutto di Husserl), cui è di fatto storicamente collegata: si tratta in sostanza di dedurre dalla pura struttura logica del pensiero delle determinazioni formali di validità immediata, indipendenti da ogni Weltanschauung. Nella sua opera il rigore logico acquista evidenza formale: diventa architettura, come condizione diretta dell'esistenza umana».
