Dakota where the Homestake Mining Company required prospective employees to sign a non-union affiliation pledge - this paper has a facsimile printed of the pledge card on the 3rd page in; small old original subscription label on front cover of the American Association for Labor Legislation New York; large format 15 ½" x 11" size; printed on thin slightly glossy-stock paper original illustrated cover; some edgewear and chipping to paper old fold line at middle cover with a bit of loss along that line which splits the pages almost to the end of the issue no loss of text; overall in good condition and a fragile survival from this period of great unrest in the mining regions of the American West. . Second edition originally published under the slightly different title Famous Recipes of Famous People and issued by the Hotel del Monte without Sunset Magazine in 1936. A compilation of celebrity recipes with the recipes attributed to the famous including: Gertrude Stein John Steinbeck Walt Disney J. Edgar Hoover Rube Goldberg and many others. Also includes a section of recipes of well-known chefs of the day with a bias toward California Hotels and the west in general as well as a short section of recipes from the Hotel Del Monte. The playful illustrations by Sinclair Ross alternately reference Hollywood and the frontier West. Endpapers reproduce the autographs of many of the celebrities featured in the book. Publisher's gilt-decorated cream-colored boards near fine. In clean and bright yellow dust jacket printed in blue and orange but with several good-sized chips to the front and rear panels. And that is because the lead-off entry in this anthology of stories is Frank Norris' "Travis Hallett's Half-back." Norris 18701902 was class of '94.<br>Â Â Â Â => It may interest the reader to know that half of the writings in this volume are by women.<br>Â Â Â Â Sole edition. The volume was a fund-raising effort: "The principal reason that these stories have been gathered together and given to the public is to start a fund wherewith to erect a fountain on the Campus of the University of California to be in harmony with the great Hearst architectural plan."<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Publisher's blue cloth stamped in gilt with title and a scene of a rolling hill with trees on it. In very good condition.<br/><br/> Pages 371/372 of the June 14 1862 edition of Harper's Magazine. Images at top show Robert Smalls and the Confederate gun-boat "Planter". These images are accompanied by the initial six paragraphs of the article relating "one of the most daring and heroic adventures since the war commenced" in which Smalls a small crew and their family members escaped slavery in Charleston by commandeering the Confederate gun-boat and running it the safety of USS Wabash a US Navy steam ship at Port Royal SC. At the bottom of the sheet is an image titled "Feeding the Negro Children Under Charge of the Military Authorities at Hilton Head South Carolina". <br><br>Harper's Weekly was a New York-based illustrated political magazine published from 1857 until 1916. The magazine featured foreign and domestic news fiction essays on many subjects and humor.
