17893563Castle William's heritage as a military installation dates to 1634 when cannons first were deployed in an earthen fort to defend Boston Harbor. British officials used the fort as a refuge in the tumultuous times leading up to the American Revolution; on their way out of Boston in March 1776 the British destroyed the Fort. It was quickly rebuilt by Bostonians. <br /><br />The present view shows the rebuilt Fort with an oversized American flag waving above. The Fort served as an active military installation during the American Revolution the War of 1812 the Spanish-American War and World Wars I and II. Known as Fort Independence since 1797 the Fort today is a state park. <br /><br />Stauffer attributes the engraving to Samuel Hill who did many of the plates for the <i>Massachusetts Magazine</i>. Image measures 11 3/4" x 18 1/4"<br/> <br/> This diagram depicts Fort Vijaydurg historically known as Gheria located in western India off the coast of Maharashtra. Numerous depth soundings are noted in the harbor. Several locations marked on the map are listed in a reference key. This map is issued in 1756 in Vol. XXVI of Gentleman's Magazine. The map is in good condition with some margin loss on the top right and minor foxing. <br> <br> The Gentleman's Magazine founded by Edward Cave of London in 1731 was the first to use the term 'magazine' for any periodical. With its widespread distribution across the British Empire it was read throughout the English-speaking world. Although the magazine went into decline during the late 18th century it ran uninterrupted until 1922 reporting anything it thought would be of interest to its readers from Latin poetry to commodity prices.<br/> <br/> Gentleman's Magazine unknown

Image measures 4.75" x 6.75".<br/><br/> This unusual plan of Prague was published by The London Magazine just a few months following the 1757 Battle of Prague. Oriented with north facing left it depicts the position of the two armies with a key in the bottom margin locating the positions of the artillery reserves batteries and mortars of the Prussian Army on the map. The Battle of Prague part of the Seven Years' War was fought between the Prussians and the Austrians for control of Prague and its surroundings. Although Frederick The Great from Prussia eventually succeeded in forcing the Austrians to retreat he was unable to take the city due to the heavy losses. A beautiful title cartouche adorns the bottom right corner. Most likely engraved by Thomas Kitchin. The map is in very good condition with narrow bottom margin. "The London Magazine or Gentleman%u2019s Monthly Intelligencer" was founded in 1732 as a rival to the popular Gentleman's Magazine. It is England's oldest cultural and literary journal. The magazine has published a wide range of writers from Wordsworth Shelley Keats T.S. Eliot W. H. Auden Evelyn Waugh among others. The first two installments of Thomas De Quincey's "Confessions of an English Opium-Eater" appeared in the 1820 edition of the journal. Today after nearly three centuries The London Magazine continues to publish some of the best writings from London and beyond.<br/><br/> The London Magazine unknown books
17883752This engraving of the lighthouse at Cape Henlopen is the first image of a lighthouse to appear in an American magazine. Indeed we believe this is one of the earliest American images of a lighthouse one can hope to obtain. The Cape Henlopen light was completed in 1767 and first lit in 1769. This view according to the caption was drawn in 1780. It was published in the February 1788 issue of <i>The Columbian Magazine</i>. Although the engraving plate is not signed the engraver was likely James Trenchard one of the proprietors of the <i>Magazine</i>. <br /><br />This wonderful early American image has survived longer than its subject -- the lighthouse depicted collapsed in 1926 due to erosion. <br /><b>References:</b> Lewis: <i>A Guide to Engravings in American Magazines 1741-1810</i>: p. 4.
