Copy with late 18th century signature of "EX-LIBRIS MARSHALL". An old dealer has indicated the book is form the library of the famed chief Justice John Jay Marshall which I am not able to confirm or deny. "Among the prominent Dutch Hebraists and theologians was Johannes Leusden from the University of Utrecht. One of his most important studies the Philologus Hebræus editio princeps Utrecht 1656 goes far beyond a philological research of the Hebrew language and is a comprehensive study of Judaism and Jewish life. " An entire chapter is devoted alone to Kabbalah and the Kabbalists. For those interested in bibliography there is a pioneering section detailing the known surviving manuscripts of the Bible. Leusden also edited very important editions of the Hebrew Bible including the fames 1661 Athias edition. The team of the Christian Leusden and the Jewish Athias resulted in the attraction of both a strong Jewish and Gentile clientele and very successful publishing venture. ; Latin Hebrew; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; Judaica Kabbalah Jewish Traditions Bible study Kabbalist Kaballah jüdischjüdischeThorahTorasefertalmudJudaicHebraicachanukkiascarce booksignedJudaicaLubavitchANTIQUE . Accomplished in a small but highly legible script. An extensive manuscript compilation of Catholic doctrines teachings and sermons assembled in Mexico during the early 19th century. The indulgence bears an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the Latin phrase "Columba Mea in Forminibus Petrae" and promises various lengths of indulgence from several of the bishops of colonial Mexico. The initial 115 pages contains over thirty entries comprising the author's lessons on church doctrine and other teachings on subjects such as faith hope charity neighborly love marriage and much else. Each entry is headed by a short biblical quotation from which the text takes its prompt. The remaining 340 pages contain over fifty original sermons on a wide variety of topics each also as is traditional with a Bible passage as its inspiration. A detailed table of contents follows the title page. The final four entries are in an altered hand and were added later with last being dated "Zalapa 1825." A wealth of original Mexican Catholic teaching in manuscript. unknown

196241240Privately Printed 1962. Roy. 8vo. First Edition title and text in red and black with symbolic decorations in the text; splendidly bound in full straight-grain tan morocco BY ZAEHNSDORF the upper board expertly inlaid in gilt and red as a facsimile of Geoffrey Clarke's Golden Cross all edges gilt marbled endpapers plain doublures the boards lightly age-marked lower board with three small paint splashes else a near fine copy of a characteristically accomplished binding by a master craftsman. THE BINDING IS SIGNED AS IS USUAL ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER VERSO. IT IS LIKELY THAT THIS BINDING COMMISSIONED AS IT WAS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE OCCASION IS ONE OF A MERE HANDFUL OF COPIES IF INDEED NOT UNIQUE. The splendid inlay on upper board is a skilful reinterpretation of Geoffrey Clarke's 'Golden Cross' commissioned by Basil Spence for the Cathedral Undercroft. Following its destruction in the Blitz of WWII Coventry Cathedral was rebuilt between 1956 and 1962 to a design by Sir Basil Spence. Having achieved in the building a time-spanning fusion of 'arts & crafts' and modernism Spence looked for artists to create his 'basket of jewels' a glittering procession of artworks reflecting the simple grandeur of the Cathedral as a whole. He settled first on two established masters: John Piper for the glass for the Baptistry Window and Graham Sutherland who contributed 'Christ in Glory in the Tetramorph' reputedly the largest tapestry made in a single piece. To complement these and pieces by Epstein Frink Hutton and others he then commissioned the young Geoffrey Clarke to design crosses for the High Altar and Undercroft. The latter piece emerged as the 'Golden Cross' - the focus of the present binding. AN EVOCATIVE AND RARE POSSIBLY UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF ZAEHSNSDORF'S CRAFTSMANSHIP. [Privately Printed], hardcover

1654032978London: Printed by J G for Nathanael Webb and William Grantham at the signe of the Bear in St Paul's Church-yard 1654 A good copy in contemporary full pigskin with blind ruled lines to boards. The pages have been cropped so the margins and gutter are quite small and the book is slightly bowed as if it has been held or kept in a pocket for ease of reference. It is certainly an entertaining read. Thomas Hall circa 1610-1665 was a Presbyterian and at the time of publication was Pastor of Kingsnorton. His congregation dismissed him at the Restoration - and if his sermons resembled his writing it is easy to imagine why. A small sample: 'Lastly as no man may weare his owne haire excessively long so he may not weare the long haire of another be it of a man a woman or it may be of some harlot who is now in Hell lamenting there the abuse of that excrement'. The binding is sound with a area of leather loss at the bottom of the spine and light general wear. Contents with title blank verso; poems 5pp; errata 1p; text pp 1-95 blank verso; Appendix title blank verso; text 99-125 Finis; rear blank. Decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals. Paper is clean with toning. The title page is very browned at the edges which are slightly ragged and there is a small pasted piece of paper over one word on last page of poems. There is some mispagination but the text is continuous: 58-56-60; 78-69-80; and 92-39-94. Complete in all respects and in excellent condition throughout with clean pages clear print and ample margins. Engraved title is a rich deep impression. A superb example with minor scuffing and fading of boards. Wing P3028. Madan II 1032. A treatise on the Number of the Beast by the English clergyman scientific instrument maker early member of the Royal Society and friend of John Aubrey. According to the ODNB Potter was interested in "connecting 25 the ‘appropinque’ square root of 666 with various institutions in the Roman Catholic church. His ideas were elaborated in a manuscript which was read in 1637 by Joseph Mede and commended as a wonderful discovery the ‘happiest that ever yet came into the world.'" Pepys considered it "mighty ingenious." It continued to be influential and was reprinted as late as 1808. Aubrey’s short life of Potter paints a vivid picture of his character and highly inventive mind. N. B. 1642032836Oxford: Printed by Leonard Lichfield 1642 An extremely scarce 1st edition copy of Francis Potter's work. Potter 1594-1678 was a clergyman with a wide range of other interests. He was an early member of the Royal Society admitted in 1663 experimenting with bees theorising about blood transfusion and making instruments including a sundial. He developed a theory that the approximate square root of 666 - 25 - had a strong connection with catholic institutions. His first attempt to set this out in 1637 was described as a 'wonderful discovery' by Joseph Mede whose 'judgement' is included in the work. This copy has been rebacked relaying as much as possible of the spine which has raised bands red title label and the date at the base. The corners have been rebuilt. The boards are marbled with a stain on the rear board. Edges are scuffed. Internally there is the armorial bookplate of William Legge to the front pastedown endpaper. The endpaper joints have been repaired. Page edges are red. Contents: initial blank; copper-engraved title page by W Marshall - with old signature to top; Joseph Mede's judgement with old scholarly note to margin 1p; To the reader 8pp; Chapter list and corrigenda 6pp; text with diagrams pp 1-214; finis; final blank. Text with decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals. The contents are very clean. At some point one or more adventurous worms explored the top corners of most pages from To the Reader to p 197. They were clearly discerning readers because they missed the text. Expert professional paper repair by bookbinder Elizabeth Howard has stabilised the paper and although there is discolouration which also affects the verso of the title the impact is minimised. The numbers at the top of pp 105/6 and 109-114 are affected. Another small worm exploration affects pp 167-187 again without impact on the text but the diagram at p 175 has a small hole in it. P 11 has lost the bottom corner tip. Book measures 21.5 cm x 14.6 cm. Please enquire if you would like to see further images. Printed by Leonard Lichfield hardcover
