1925W1914New York: Unpublished 1925. Original photograph by the Australian-American photographer Anton Bruehl 1900-1982. A vintage circa 1925 gelatin silver print mounted on cardstock. 7 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches. The photograph is unsigned but the composition of the still-life photo clearly is Bruehl's. From the same collection we have a signed photo that matches the size backing and printing of this one. In 1919 the Australian born Bruehl along with his brother and parents emigrated to the United States where he worked for Western Electric as an electrical engineer until an exhibition of Clarence H. White's photographs persuaded him to change professions. In 1924 he enrolled in White's photography school and by the next year was hired to teach in the school. In a 1976 article for Image magazine landscape photographer Joe Deal observed that "Anton Bruehl's background in engineering and love of machine forms in combination with his training under Clarence White resulted in still life photographs which give the satisfaction of well-resolved formal problems and portraits choreographed with the rhythm and movement characteristic of the age." The early photograph offered here already displays the combination of formalism with inventiveness that was characteristic of Breuhl's later color photographs for Vogue and Vanity Fair. It is easy to imagine that photographs like this one were responsible for Ansel Adams' observation that Bruehl's work was "entirely contrived and yet absolutely sincere." Bruehl's early black and white still-life photographs are much more scarce than his later color images and they seldom come on the market. The photograph is clean and bright with 3 crease lines that were probably made when the photo was affixed to the backing. The verso of the backing has some old glue stains. First Edition. Single Sheet. Very Good. Illus. by Anton Bruehl. 7 1/2" X 5 1/2". Photo. Unpublished
162010720Salamanca: Antonia Ramirez 1620. First Edition . Hardcover. Good. Rare 1st edition in vellum binding which is not original but very old; the binder used a leaf which has a portion of a royal seal on the rear free endpaper with the date 1726; also on the obverse of that leaf is written "Huno emi libry pothuidie Kalendar gbxu 1728 - JR Vn." which I believe is the binder's signature; I may very well not have all the letters right. The spine is inscribed "Teatro de Los Dioses". Vellum is in good condition; an old rip in the rear cover has been sewn shut. Otherwise it is rippled a little soiled and darkened on the spine. The endpapers likewise are rippled and creased and written on by several different people. The text is likewise good; begins with the engraved title page which has been reinforced on the foreedge and has an old owner's name at the bottom. The first introductory page also has owner's writing. There is no loss of text anywhere but there are water stains here and there the worst being a brown stain at the upper right from p. 897 to the end. The final page of the 'Tabla' table of contents appearing after the text has short tears in the foreedge. All text is Spanish. Note: the second volume of this work was published in 1623 and a third by a different author in 1688.

Antonia Ramirez hardcover

Nicholas Sanders c.1530-1581 Roman Catholic agent and historian ordained c.1550 exiled in Augsburg in 1566. This work by Sanders "De visibili Monarchia Ecclesiae" first published in 1571 contains the first narrative of the sufferings of the English Roman Catholics. Its extreme Papalism and its strenuous defence of Pius V.'s bull excommunicating and deposing Elizabeth marked out Sanders for the enmity of the English government and he retaliated with lifelong efforts to procure the deposition of Elizabeth and the restoration of Roman Catholicism. His expectations of the cardinalate were disappointed by Pius V.'s death in 1572 and Sanders spent the next few years at Madrid trying to embroil Philip II. who gave him a pension of 300 ducats in open war with Elizabeth." The state of Christendom" he wrote "dependeth upon the stout assailing of England." His writings have been the basis of all Roman Catholic histories of the English Reformation. In this work he is deeply critical of Henry VIII even suggesting that Anne Boleyn was actually Henry VIII's own daughter. Lucius Caecilius Firmianus signo Lactantius c. 250 - c. 325 was an early North African Christian author who became an advisor to Roman emperor Constantine I guiding his Christian religious policy in its initial stages of emergence and a tutor to his son Crispus. His most important work is the Institutiones Divinae "The Divine Institutes" an apologetic treatise intended to establish the reasonableness and truth of Christianity to pagan critics. He is best known for his apologetic works widely read during the Renaissance by humanists who called Lactantius the "Christian Cicero". The Basle printer Henricus Petrus was responsible for the publication of very important works including an early edition of Copernicus and Munster's Cosmographia. He printed this Latin and Greek edition of Lactantius' work in a mixture of roman single column italic double column with the indices in triple column and with a few woodut initials. This is the first appearance of of the commentary by Xystus Betuleius who composed German and Latin didactic dramas this commentary and also another on Cicero; and a concordance of the Greek New Testament.
