Riga, 1794-98. Small 8vo. Bound uncut in five contemporary, uniform paper bindings with gilt title-labels to spines. Spines a bit darkened and with a bit of wear, especially to capitals. Some very light occasional brownspotting. Overall an exceptionally nice set, in original condition, and fully complete with all the general and specific title-pages. A very nice and clean copy with one full page woodcut as title page, consisting of one large central illustration depicting a religious gathering of bishops and other holy men, sorrounded 12 smaller illustrations (6 on each side of the large one), each depicting a saint. Préface de Johannes Hentenius, et sans doute établissement du texte. Marque de l'imprimeur en page de titre. Lettrines. Colophon au verso du dernier feuillet : Excudebat Antverpiae Amatus Tavernerius, anno M.D. LXIX. Le texte se trouve dans la version de la Vulgate de la très célèbre édition de Louvain de 1547 ; Charles Quint avait en effet expréssément demandé une nouvelle version plus correcte de la Bible et celle-ci fut faite d'après les textes grecs, araméens et hébreux. Cet Ancien Testament comprend le Pentateuque : Genèse, Exode, Lévitique, Livre des nombres, Deuteronome, et Josué ainsi que le Livre des juges et Ruth. Tous les autres textes ont été exclus de cette édition : soit Livre de Job, Psaumes, Proverbes, Ecclésiaste, Cantique des Cantiques, Sagesse de Salomon, Ecclésiastique, mais également les prophètes : Esaïe, Jérémie... Reliure en plein maroquin rouge du XVIIe. Dos lisse orné de 4 fleurons, avec encadrement de fers aux petits points. Titres dorés. Plats richement décorés d'un rectangle central avec médaillon et rinceaux dans les écoinçons ; fers angulaires et multiples filets d'encadrement. Tranches dorées. Coiffe de queue noircie avec 2 petits trous de vers. Frottements. Exemplaire légèrement gauchi. Manque le second feuillet de garde marbré. Léger manque au mors supérieur en tête. Bel exemplaire en maroquin rouge orné du XVIIe. Si on trouve des références pour cette bible anversoise dans les bibliothèques, on constate que les collations de ces bibles ne sont pas les mêmes, ni le format ; ainsi la bibliothèque de l'université catholique de l'ouest à Angers affiche [26], 327, 86, [32] contre (16) 319ff. pour la nôtre, avec un colophon à la date de 1571 et non plus 1569 comme pour cet exemplaire ; en outre l'exemplaire apparaît in folio et le texte sur deux colonnes. On trouve un exemplaire similaire au nôtre avec la même collation mais chez un autre éditeur à Anvers : Birckmann (mais au format in-8) ; cet exemplaire cite dans son titre les livres de la bible utilisés dans cette bible, à l'instar de la bible que nous présentons, ce qui exclu toute possibilité de manque pour la nôtre. Toujours chez le même imprimeur anversois mais chez Birckmann à nouveau, un exemplaire à la National Library of Scotland présente une collation différente avec 498f. au format in-8. Enfin, pour accroître l'énigme, Stelsius a également édité cette bible en 5 volumes, toujours à la même date et chez le même imprimeur. Il faut donc s'autoriser à croire à plusieurs sorties de cette bible dans des différents formats et chez plusieurs éditeurs, mais toujours chez le même imprimeur. Ajoutons que pour les exemplaires semblables au nôtre repérés dans les bibliothèques, aucune ne fait mention d'une seconde partie éditée à part, ce qui résoudrait l'énigme d'une Bible s'achevant au livre de Ruth. Cette Bible existe également à cette date chez Stelcius mais avec des gravures et une autre collation, au format in folio. Ex dono Perrot Ablancourt au bas du premier feuillet blanc. [croix latine]6, a-z8, A-S8., relié. - Edition des oeuvres de Tertullien réalisée par Jean de Gagny et Martin Mesnart, d'après 2 notes au verso du titre. Belle marque de l'imprimeur en page de titre. Cette édition contient 11 traités de plus que les éditions précédentes des oeuvres de Tertullien dont deux, intitulés "De Trinitate" et "De cibis judaicis", sont en réalité dus à Novatien. Edition dont le privilège a été partagée avec Jean de Roigny. Adams T408. Notes et vie de Tertullien par Beatus Rhenanum. Cette édition se base sur celle réalisée par Beatus Rhenanum en 1539 à Bâle. Reliure en plein veau brun d'époque. Dos à nerfs muet. Coiffe de tête élimée avec fentes aux mors. Accrocs au premier nerf. Coins émoussés. Traces de mouillure dans la marge centrale et celles du haut sur l'ensemble de l'ouvrage, assez claires, puis s'estompant, revenant ensuite. Sur les 50 dernières pages, trace de mouillure sur la moitié des feuillets, plutôt claire et peu gênante, plus prononcée sur les derniers feuillets d'index. Feuillets 3 à 7 restaurés une bande de papier colmatant une déchirure. Quelques notes manuscrites dans les marges. Celui qui fut considéré comme le plus grand théologien de son temps était issu d'une famille berbère, il fut en outre le premier théologien provenant d'Afrique du nord. Il meurt vers 220 à Carthage, mais ne sera jamais cannonisé par l'église puisqu'il rejoignit à la fin de sa vie un mouvement hérétique, les Montanistes. Son oeuvre est remarquable, c'est avec lui, véritablement, que commence la théologie latine, et la pensée de la Trinité, dont il emploie pour la première fois le terme. Il affirme ainsi l'unité de Dieu en trois personnes, et que le Christ est à la fois Dieu et homme, composé de 2 substances. Cette pensée théologique, on le sait, aura un avenir immense. Ses traités abordent différents sujets : De la patience, De la chair du Christ, De la resurrection, De l'âme, Des juifs, De la Trinité... Il s'y trouve un certain nombre d'ouvrages polémiques. Clark Edinburgh. 2 xxx 9-188 1 advert pp. Near Fine recently expertly rebacked with original spine piece onlaid corners refreshed. Presentation gift inscriptions front end page -"Jane G. Morgan from her Sister Lauretta. Dec. 25th 1857. Given under peculiar circumstances to her friend Jennie W. Baird. Sunday April 11 1858". Laid in is a period gift envelope with one sheeted folded to make a 4 page note addressed to Miss Jennie Baird - Present dated Wednesday May 14th and signed Sincerely L. L. Watson. The letter explains the "peculiar circumstances" of the gift - Aunt Let Lauretta is on her deathbed and is gifting this lovely book and a bar of soap to her friend Jennie whose gifts of flower bouquets have cheered her in her demise - "God's flowers Dear dear Jennie; oh that the graces of the spirit may bloom in her heart." The final 2 end pages bear small pin holes from where the letter was pinned in at one time. Lacking final blank leaf. 20 Woodcut illustrations depicting imagery from the "Apocalypse of John" accompany the text. Occasional woodcut decorative initials are also present. The title displays Ambroise Giraults woodcut printers device. A clipped area 1.7 x 6 cm in the upper outer margin of the title page is carefully restored using matching period paper difficult to notice at first glance. The title is also marked with the addition of red hand-ruled panel lines well executed perhaps done at an early date imitating a style sometimes seen in 17th century English Bibles and prayer books. Interior contains occasional spots of foxing; the title shows some scattered foxing; a couple of words of extremely faint marginalia are present in the outer margin of the third leaf and p. 107 Oiii. Bound in full modern off-white vellum over boards after an early style. Apparently at least 5 or 6 printers/publishers shared in the production of this edition; therefore several variations of the imprint and the title page exist. The colophon reads: Gulielmus Thibout imprimebat Parisiis in via vulgo dicta boni putei sub insigni quinque speculorum anno domini M.D.X.LV. Mense Septembris. Rupert de Deutz c. 1075 c.1129 was an influential Benedictine theologian who later in life became Abbot of Deutz Abby in Cologne. He wrote many works of Biblical exegesis. Ruperts commentary on the Apocalypse of John is noted by scholars alongside the slightly later commentary by Joachim of Fiore as one of the more original Apocalypse commentaries of the Middle Ages.
