17752487Mexico City: En la Imprenta de D. Felipe de Zuniga y Ontiveros 1775. About very good. 6118pp. Contemporary limp vellum. Fore-edges binding and text block darkened by smoke with markings creeping into margins of several leaves including title page. Light dampstaining along lower edge somewhat heaver on final leaves. An unusual Mexican religious primer with teachings based on the doctrines of St. Bonaventure but adapted to the practices of the Franciscan Order. The work was created for Franciscan novices and sets forth rules and orders for various offices duties and other responsibilities as well as standard beliefs and practices for the order. This is the second edition with the first having been printed over fifty years earlier in 1721. Both were likely printed in small numbers being intended for the rather limited audience of Franciscan novices. The present copy belonged to Henry Ward Poole the noted American engineer and collector of Mexicana with his manuscript initials and shelf number on the front pastedown. Scarce on the market with only one copy appearing in available sales records in the past thirty years and a fairly nice example with good provenance.
17604694Mexico 1760. Very good plus. 3pp. on a bifolium completed in manuscript. Contemporary ink signatures and original paper seal at bottom left of first leaf recto; extensive manuscript notations on second leaf. Previously folded; light edge wear and creasing. Minor tanning and soiling. An attractively illustrated and scarce example of a confraternity patent for a religious order in mid-18th century Mexico. This bifolium confers membership to and lists the benefits for those inducted into the congregation of the Parish of San Sebastian and was filled out and given to a woman Teresa Ruiz on October 25 1761. The first leaf recto is attractively printed containing a skillful engraved illustration of the Virgin Mary accompanied by St. Joseph and St. Sebastian on each side with Jesus holding the Eucharist in a cloud over head and decorated with numerous detailed printers' ornaments. The text on this page prints the principal benefits of membership which include assistance with all burial rites upon death twenty-five pesos paid to surviving family following the same and inclusion in all masses said for the congregation as well as in all graces and indulgenced received by it. The interior two pages print a list of sixteen indulgences conferred upon the congregation by Pope Benedict XIV. Most interestingly three manuscript notes each dated September 1807 record that the female recipient of the patent passed away earlier that month in the Convento de Jesus Maria that she received burial rites in accordance with her membership and that twenty-five pesos was paid out by the treasury of the congregation. Scarce we locate one other copy of this patent at the University of Pennsylvania; the Newberry hold a copy of a later edition with a different illustration. A very interesting document of popular piety and local religious organization in 18-century Mexico. unknown

1742000444Good with no dust jacket. 1742. Full-Leather. FOLIO. PRINTED 1742. CLASSIC HEBREW WORK ON RITUAL SACRIFICE. Rare. No copies at auction in the American Auction Records. The Book: Ibn Hayyim Aaron 1545-1632. Sefer Korban Aharon : ve-hu perush le-sefer Sifra . / hibro Aharon Ibn Hayim ; nit`orer Eliyahu ben Mosheh Desoya le-hadpiso shenit Desoya : h. mo. l. 502 1742. COMPLETE. 20 260 leaves ; 36 cm Red calf and Boards pages age-toned. The Hebrew word for sacrifice is Korban. The sacrifice of an animal to a deity was an acceptable form of worship among the ancients. Many mystical rites which are found in other religions can also be found in the Jewish sacrificial system. The Hebrew word Korban comes from the root "karab" which means "to approach" or "draw near." Many forms of religion believed that before "approaching " a deity one had to present a gift or offering to appease the god. Maimonides the great Jewish scholar philosopher and theologian believed the entire sacrificial system came about to accommodate man's primitive desires. Maimonides says the Torah limits the practice permitting it only in certain places at certain times by certain people and for certain purposes. Maimonides suggests that these limitations are designed to wean a primitive people away from the pagan rite of sacrifice. ; Hebrew Judaica; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall; Ritual Sacrifice MaimonidesKabbalah Judaica Jewish Studies Hebrew Talmud Rashi . hardcover

Languages: English.
