Poupardin Reports of acts of the kings of Provence p. 94 LI.

Forward in English
The usefulness of a reproduction in the form of facsimiles of original documents of Carolingian monarchs does not need a long justification. The interest of this from the standpoint of paleography diplomatic and philological is indeed obvious. It is only with a collection of these rare remains of missing archives that you can follow the evolution of writing and historical events of the Carolingian chancery. The initiative of our late colleague Edward Privat well through which this publication has been decisive and prepared raised difficulties which had long opposed this enterprise demanded from all sides. We would like to pay tribute to his memory for the valuable assistance he has given us from the beginning with untiring zeal.

The best thing would probably have been to publish all of the original documents of the Carolingians. But they are scattered in public or even private deposits not only in France but in Belgium Switzerland. Germany Italy and Spain.

He was taken to such a publication of an international agreement. Difficulties and delays of any enterprise is known of that order. This project was risky or never result in completion even after a very long time. So have we resigned ourselves to reproduce the originals preserved in the public filings of France. Moreover these are richer alone than all foreign deposits. In addition we have no doubt that if this initiative is promoted by success other countries will start undertaking similar publications so that in a few years the scientific world will have full reproduction of the original of the Carolingians diplomas.

Even so limited in space our company features reproduction of about 300 acts. In this approximate total are including not only authentic instruments but copies almost contemporary figurative and also some fake ancient whose comparison with authentic instruments is the highest degree instructive. It seemed essential to divide all of the reproductions albums presented in chronological order and each comprising forty to fifty plates. Each album is dedicated to a kingdom or a particular group of kingdoms. Thus the album # 1 contains the original documents Pepin Carloman Charlemagne . The reign of Louis the Pious provide the material for the album # 2 . That of Charles the Bald 100 originals will claim two albums: the successors of Charles the Bald Louis II Louis III. Carloman Eudes Charles the Simple will an album. The Carolingians and the tenth century Kings of AquitaineProvence Burgundy and Lorraine probably clans held a sixth and possibly a seventh album.

For the choice of format should be avoided two pitfalls . The reproduction of certain originals in their actual dimensions could make the consultation facsimiles very inconvenient if these dimensions are large. On the other hand an excessive reduction had even more serious drawbacks and could even cancel the interest of the publication. We decided to adopt a medium size 44 X 56 avoids this double disadvantage.
Each facsimile is accompanied by the actual dimensions of the original date of the document and the reference has the best edition has been given. Here we refer to Volume 1 of diplomata Karolinorum Engelbert Muhlbacher and colleagues Dopsch Alfons Johann Lechner Michael Tangl published in 906 in the series in-4 Monumenta Historica Germaniae. A chronological table with analyzes of QUALIFICATIONS with each album and a general table will be attached to the last of them.In each album ranking boards is done in three time series for each rule: first the original and the copies and finally fake.
This album includes 42 boards including 29 executed from the original 4 of Pepin the Short Carloman 5 19 Charlemagne and 1 Gisèle her sister. 8 other replicate very ancient copies: 3 Pépin 5 Charlemagne. Finally the last 3. 2 are fake Charlemagne of ninth century and 1 is even the forged in the twelfth century from the original. We have left out a few copies or fake more recently and less palaeographic or diplomatic interest:copy of the tenth and eleventh century undated immunity granted by Charlemagne church Paris National Archives K 7 No. 13; Muhlbacher Diplomatâ 1 No. 193 the two fake eleventh century in poor condition preserved in the Archives of Jura as Exhibit H I. 3 gifts of Charlemagne the abbey of Saint-Claude Muhlbacher Diplomatâ I No. 301 and 302 the copy of the twelfth century fake diploma the Charlemagne Psalmody preserved in the Archives du Gard as Exhibit H II2 Muhlbacher Diplomatâ 1 No. 3o3 and finally the very coarse fake twelfth century preserved at the national Library in lat 9264 manuscripts not 1 and 2 degrees Pepin to Figeac. Muhlbacher Diplomatâ 1 No. 33 and 34 and lat. 9264 not 1 and 2 degrees of Pepin and Charlemagne to SaintMaximin Trier; Muhlbacher Diplomatâ I No. 39 and 276 and the fake Hildegard wife of Charlemagne as the twelfth century preserved in the archives of the Moselle as Exhibit H 126 Muhlbacher Diplomala 1 No. 318.
