Vellum lightly soiled and curled. Minor worming at lower right corner of text block not affecting text. Otherwise lighting soiling and toning internally. St. Peter Nolasco founded the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary i.e. the Order of Mercy or Mercedarians in 1218. It was quickly successful in its goal of ransoming Christian prisoners from the Crusades and other religious conflicts and the order expanded to other charitable work. A third order of Mercedarians was founded for lay male and female supporters in 1260 and the first Mercedarian convent was established in Lima in 1535 the year of the Spanish founding of the city. This work gives the rules constitutions privileges and indulgences of the third order in Lima on the occasion of its re-establishment at the conventual church of St. Michael. A fine woodcut of the arms of the Mercedarian order surrounded by a typographic border graces the verso of the title page. This is the first edition; the work was reprinted in 1870. OCLC locates four copies at Yale Indiana the BNC and the BNE. unknown

46119Northern Italy. circa 1460. 150 x 120mm. Excellent condition both recto and verso archivally mounted and ready for framing. This is a beautiful and delicate page of vellum from a breviary written in Northern Italy around 1460. A breviary is normally a "liturgical work which contains the psalms and hymns the readings from Sacred Scripture and from the writings of the Fathers the prayers and the responses which are combined to form the canonical hours of the divine office of prayer recited daily throughout the world by priests and the religious." It is of course written in Latin in two columns with blue and red decorated capitals and is in an amazing "assured gothic bookhand" in sepia on vellum with additional exquisite pale sepia penwork. The blue initial 'O' at the bottom of the right column on the Recto side begins the prayer for Vespers on Palm Sunday. The vellum has only minor browning of the edges with the text and decoration perfectly clear and bright. The hair follicles of the animal supplying the vellum usually calf skin are clearly visible in the margins making this gem all the more fascinating. A quality photocopy is on wall display in store with the original vellum under cover for inspection as requested. Northern Italy. circa 1460. hardcover

1945004838Boston: Little Brown & Co. 1945. Book Club First Edition Thus. . Hardcover. Near Fine/Good Plus to Very Good. Waugh's signature work -- the story of the rich and damned Marchmain family as told by Captain Charles Ryder revisiting the family's home Brideshead during the war years. It is a story of the stress that religious faith can put on different personalities within a family as it confronts love and divorce. After publication in England in 1945 the first edition published in the U.S. was Little Brown's Bookclub edition also in 1945. The Little Brown trade edition was not issued until 1946 resulting in the unusual occurence of the bookclub edition being the true first U.S. edition. This copy in red cloth-covered boards with black lettering shows only lighlty-bumped upper corner and spine ends and slightly soiled text edges o/w clean and unmarked tight and square. The dustjacket with a brown spine and front panel and a cream back panel containing "critical comments" from five earlier Waugh novels taken from an Edmund Wilson "New Yorker" article shows wear at the corners and spine ends with a one-inch tear and chipping at the top of the spine chipping at the upper corners and tiny tears and creasing along the bottom edge. The dj's back panel is somewhat soiled. That said the dj is 98% whole with no missing design or printed matter. Overall this is a collectable copy of the true First American edition of what many consider Waugh's master work.

Little Brown & Co. hardcover

1967019069New York: Readex Microprint Corporation 1967. 32 volumes. SEE PHOTO. A gorgeous set. Brand New in perfect condition. The set offered here is identical to the one in the photo but comes from our warehouse STILL SEALED in the PUBLISHER'S CARDBOARD SHIPPING BOXES 10 boxes total. NO rubbing. NO fading. Bright clean square and tight. NO owner's name or bookplate. NO remainder mark. NOT library discards. Fresh and crisp -- obviously never read. This set is from the first printing of the 32 volume Compact Edition. It consists of CATALOGUE OF PRINTED BOOKS TO 1955 27 volumes published in 1967 TEN YEAR SUPPLEMENT 1956-1965 5 volumes published in 1969. Described here are all printed books acquired by the British Library from its origin in the 18th century through 1965 in total more than 4 million entries. The British Library's copyright privilege and aggressive acquisitions combined to build one of the world's most comprehensive collections from 15th century incunabula to modern first editions. The Library of Congress has only 25% of the items described here. In 32 large volumes each 8.25" wide by 10.75" tall the compact BMC includes every word from the original edition. Approximately 10 volumes of the original edition are contained in each volume of this edition. Thus the complete contents of the 313 original volumes are stored here in just 63 inches of shelfspace. SEE PHOTO. When compared to the original the compact BMC's volumes have a larger format and more but thinner pages. The type size is reduced but remains clear and sharp. Years ago this edition's print size was legible "to the naked eye" but these days our aging vision finds a magnifying glass to be very helpful. The BMC is an invaluable tool for scholars librarians booksellers and collectors. With 4 million entries this set provides more bang for your reference buck than just about anything else. For example it describes 1310 different printed editions of the Bible in English. Due to the comprehensiveness of the section on Bibles volumes 2 & 3 by themselves brought $400 at the Witten sale. These 32 volume were published in 1967 at $930. The set is uniformly bound in the original gilt-stamped blue cloth. Will require SUBSTANTIAL extra postage at our cost. Total shipping cost for all 10 boxes in the US via media mail including delivery confirmation tracking will be about $170 US Post Office rates subject to change. That is only about $1 per pound so not too bad for 4 MILLION entries! Overseas shipping would likely cost well over $1000 less if your country still allows airmail M-Bags. Hiowever no insurance is permitted outside the US so foreign buyers would assume all risks of damage or non-delivery. 1967 compact edition. Oversize Hardcover -very heavy.
