Title vignette coat of arms. xv 590 pages 1 leaf frontispiece portrait illustrations. Biography of Thomas Wolsey born c. 1475 made cardinal 1515 Henry VIII's lord chancellor and from 1515-1529 Wolsey's rule in foreign affairs was near-complete. Unable to arrange an annulment for Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon and unpopular with those around Anne Boleyn Henry's proposed new bride Wolsey was arrested near York in November 1530 and accused of treason. He died on 29 November of the same year as he was traveling to face trial. Very Good plus in unsigned contemporary fine binding of black morocco the back with five raised bands and gilt rules and lettering and blind tooling the covers with gilt chain decoration bordering intricately blind tooled decorations the page block edges stained brown edges of covers gilt. The armorial bookplate of the private library of Thornham Hall front paste down. Very Good Plus light rubbing to morocco toning at edges of paste downs internally quite clean and bright. With the book plate of Alfred Rubens at front paste down and with TLS laid in on E.P Goldschmidt & Co. Ltd. letterhead dated 16th May 1933 to A. Rubens Esq. - "Dear Sir We have lately found a copy of a pamphlet which we believe may interest you." and signed in ink by E. P. Goldschmidt. Alfred Rubens 1903-1998 was an English collector and historian and chairman of the London Jewish Museum for many years. Ernst Philip Goldschmidt 1887-1954 was a legendary bookseller scholar and bibliophile. And although no indication internally this copy most recently from the collection of Joel Silver Director of the Lilly Library. A marvelous rare book world copy indeed ! The baptism and conversion to Christianity of Eve Cohan caused a huge uproar in late 17th century London. She converted to be married to Michael Verboon and her parents tried to have him arrested. Holland's obituary in the American Anthropologist vol. 67 issue 1 1967 pp.80-82 including bibliography accorded him high praise: 'The success with which he had applied himself during the greater part of the past six years to field work and the productivity he had shown in publishing his research results make his early death an incalculable loss to the field of Maya studies.' 1p. 4to. In fair condition lightly-aged and worn. In remains of Air Mail envelope addressed to 'Srta. Francoise Cabeaux 152 Chausee de Charleroi Bruxelles 6 Belgique'. He begins by thanking her for her letter adding 'The rainy season has started in Mexico and so things are quite similar to the way that you describe Belgium these days.' He thanks her again for her interest in his work and expresses his desire 'to publish in European newspapers and magazines with your help'. He will 'send along anything that might help you to interest a magazine in this work'. He is publishing 'another article in a Buffalo New York newspaper' with 'a larger number and variety of photographs' and 'will send it along as soon as possible'. His 'book' should be published 'within the next month or two' and he will send her a copy: 'You remember it will be published in Spanish and not in English. But if there is interest there I would certainly be in favor of publishing it in Europe.' He ends in the hope that he 'may get to Europe next summer for some scientific meetings in Madrid'.
