From our own research Fray Tome de Jesus/Thome de Jesus/Thomas of Jesus was a reformer and preacher born in Lisbon 1529 and died in prison at Sagena Morocco in April 1582. He was educated by the Augustinian Hermits from age ten entered the order in Lisbon in 1534 completed his studies at Coimbra and was appointed novice-master. The eventual establishment of the Discalced or Reformed Augustinians is attributed to his innovations which became associated with the Crown and the Papal office. There are 2 volumes to this study but we only have this one. The book was eventually translated into Spanish English French and Italian to name but a few. From what we know the earliest printing appeared sometime around 1601-1609--Biblioteca Nacional de Espana has a copy dating from 1619 and 1622; Princeton University has the 1673 edition. Our copy is bound in calfskin/vellum; the spinetail and corner edges are bumped and well-worn; numerous cracks and creases from age; the boards are rubbed and worn; some foxing and discoloration of the covers; binding completely broken at 'Imprimatur' page; previous owner's annotations are inscribed on the last free page in Spanish.

Jacinto Andreu hardcover
