Born in Latvia, Deinard (1846-1930) owned a bookstore in Odessa for a time; in 1913 he emigrated to Palestine. The Turks expelled him in 1916, upon whoch he moved to the United States. He is notable for his bibliographic work, cataloging old manuscripts and books, and laying the groundwork for the Hebrew collection at the Library of Congress. A strongly opinionated man, Deinard wrote more than fifty of his own books as well, often pseudonymously, on a broad range of topics such as travel, biography, history, and religion.
