The Denkard is a large compendium of varied material totaling roughly 169000 words focusing on a defense of the Mazdeyansian faith and an exposition of its doctrines tenets and lore. It describes the dogma traditions customs history legends and literature of the Zoroastrians as known to its chief author Adurbad-i Emetan a high priest in Persia during the ninth century. Book VI contains the largest collection of Zoroastrian moral maxims and precepts and is the fullest exposition of the ethical wisdom of Zoroastrian Iran in late Sasanian times. Second Edition on laid paper with fine woodcut frontispiece and woodcut and printed titles lengthy eighteenth century family succession on front and rear blank preliminaries pencilled note on woodcut title; strongly bound in contemporary panelled calf boards framed and blocked in blind red sprinkled edges uncut expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down boards moderately age-worn but newly furbished a very goodcrisp clean copy in elegantly restored period binding. With the 'Moses' frontispiece and 'Cherubim' title and complete with final advertisement leaf often missing. 'Eyres' in imprint should read 'Eyre'. Title of 'Private Devotions' dated 1764 but with continuous pagination. Crisp copy of one of the leading Anglican devotional works of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The author by popular consensus was a tutor to Milton and author of several other devotional works. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. ESTC T26177 recording the first edition of 1658. Complete with half-title and with the contemporary trade stamp of John Bird bookbinder of Hatton Garden on front paste-down. The Rivingtons were at this stage booksellers to SPCK.
