ABOUT THE BOOK Sanatan Dharma (original Sanskrit words – 'Sanatan' means no beginning and no end, and 'Dharma' means path of righteousness) is the actual name of what is now popularly called Hinduism or Hindu Dharma. Thus, the term Sanatan Dharma means “the natural, ancient and eternal way of Truth”. The terms Hindu and Hinduism are more recent developments. Sanatana Dharma is the basis of our existence because these are the laws which guide the fundamental process of life. This is about human soul and a heritage that is in synchronization with Mother Nature and society, and thus democratic, scientific, timeless and universal. No other culture has looked at life with such profoundness. Sanatana Dharma has withstood the test of time for the last six or seven millennia. This is like the lofty Himalayas that stand firm, silent and serene, or the mighty River Ganga which continues to flow unhindered. The Sanatana Dharma continues to give spiritual strength and sustenance to everyone. This stands firm upon a philosophical foundation, strengthened by its language and literature, dance and drama, art and sculpture which is sustained throughout the ages by its Vedic practices. The ancient Vedic voice echoes, “Lead us from the unreal to the real. Lead us from darkness to light. Lead us from death to immortality. Let there be Peace Peace Peace”. This is a voice which continues to excite the hearts and inspire the minds of millions of men and women. Sanatana Dharma is equipped to confront the powerful forces of modern science and technology, which have no doubt brought progress but have, at the same time, dehumanized humankind. Sanatana Dharma is not of the past. This is in our soul. This is the future of the world. However, few nuns and religious women had the freedom or the funding to take the journey in the flesh. Instead they invented and adjusted devotional exercises to visit the sites virtually. These exercises, largely based on real pilgrims' accounts, made use of images and objects that helped the beholder to imagine walking alongside Christ during his torturous march to Calvary. Some provided scripts whereby votaries could animate paintings and sculptures. Others required the nun to imagine her convent as a miniature model of Jerusalem. This volume is grounded in more than a dozen texts from manuscripts written by medieval nuns and religious women, which appear here transcribed and translated for the first time, and a multiplicity of (occasionally three-dimensional) images. They attest to the ubiquity and variety of virtual pilgrimages among religious women and help to reveal the functions of certain late medieval devotional images. Languages : English.

About the Book:-Vikrama and urvasi is one of the three plays attributed to kalidasa, already advantageously known to the western world, It is corroborated by the correspondence of these two compositions, in many of their characteristic merits and defects: the subject of each is taken from heroic mythology and a royal demigod and nymph of more than human mould are the hero and heroine of either there is the same vivacity of description and tenderness of feeling treme elegance in the style, it may be difficult to decide to which the palm belongs but the story of the present play is perhaps more skilfully woven and the incidents rise out of each other more naturally than in sakuntala. About the Author:-Horace Hayman Wilson (26th September 1786 – 8th May 1860) was an English orientalist who was elected the first Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University. He acted for many years as secretary to the committee of public instruction, and superintended the studies of the Sanskrit College in Calcutta. He was one of the staunchest opponents of the proposal that English should be made the sole medium of instruction in native schools, and became for a time the object of bitter attacks. In 1832 Oxford University selected Dr. Wilson to be the first occupant of the newly founded Boden chair of Sanskrit: he had placed a column length advertisement in The Times on 6 March 1832 p 3, giving a list of his achievements and intended activities, along with testimonials, including one from a rival candidate, as to his suitability for the post. In 1836 he was appointed librarian to the East India Company. He also taught at the East India Company College.
