1900174874Xi'an China: c.1900. China's "Christian Rosetta Stone" A rubbing of the most famous document of Chinese Christianity. When rediscovered the Nestorian Stele transformed understanding of the cross-cultural history of Tang dynasty China. "The discovery of this monument is what made Westerners aware of the presence of Christianity in China prior to the mission of the Franciscans in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and those of the Jesuits" Nicolini-Zani p. 117. The Nestorian stele was carved in 781 and stands at almost three metres tall. The Chinese inscription in the calligraphy of a local official Lu Xiuyan describes how Christians arrived at the Tang capital of Xi'an in 635 and with official permission founded churches. The stele also introduces in Chinese and Syriac some of the community's senior clergy and the present state of the Nestorian church. "Erecting a stone monument to describe commend and propagate its teachings was no small undertaking for the Tang Christian community. Putting up stone monuments was an expensive exercise because of the price of the stone and the fee of the expert artisan who engraved the text. The monument itself makes an important statement about the place of Christianity within Tang society" Nicolini-Zani pp. 120-1. In 845 Christianity was banned by Emperor Wuzong and the stele was buried. Rediscovered by Chinese antiquarians around 1625 it brought to light a lost dimension to China's history and translations soon appeared in Jesuit sinological writings including Kircher's China Monumentis 1667 which includes the first printed reproduction of the text. The stone now stands at the Beilin Museum in Xi'an and is listed among the small number of protected antiquities that will never be exhibited abroad. Rubbings from the original are no longer permitted. Provenance: the theologian and sociologist Y. Y. Tsu 1886-1986 also known as Chu Yu-Yu. Born in Shanghai Tsu studied at St John's College Shanghai and at Columbia where he was one of the first Chinese students of sociology to study abroad. In 1912 he became Professor of Sociology at St John's and later served as religious director of the Peking Union Medical College. "In 1940 he was consecrated an Episcopal bishop in Shanghai and was named Assistant Bishop of Hong Kong and Bishop of Kunming where he began his Burma Road work. Bishop Tsu was known. as the 'Bishop of the Burma Road' because of his efforts to befriend Allied troops traveling the international highway that ran through his district" obituary in New York Times. In 1931 Tsu held a visiting lectureship at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley California. This rubbing was gifted to the institution by Tsu and displayed there during the 1930s. It is regularly mentioned as a point of interest in contemporary tourist guides to the state. Rubbing from stone on multiple paper sheets arranged soon after execution to form 120 x 320 mm curved headpiece 100 x 588 mm title and 1825 x 870 text body mounted on four long pieces of paper joined to form area of 2338 x 958 mm edges of mount reinforced with old decorative white paper. Rubbing generally sharp and legible a few surface blemishes sectional joins expertly reinforced in places on verso: a very good example of an imposing piece. 1905184601Shanghai: American Bible Society 1905. The Word on the street First edition traced in two institutions only designed to aid Christian missionaries preaching to China's 18 million Shanghainese speakers. Although unstated on the title page this version was prepared by John Alfred Silsby a presbyterian missionary eventually resident in the city for four decades. During the 19th century Christian missionaries produced transliteration and romanization systems for over 20 Chinese dialects. The first romanized Shanghainese gospel was published in 1856 Matthew edited by Chao Yin Sung and the first romanized New Testament appeared in 1870-1. Silsby 1858-1939 issued the Gospel of Matthew as a standalone work in 1895 and this edition of the gospels followed a decade later. In 1913 he completed his important reference An English-Chinese Vocabulary of the Shanghai Dialect. This work was printed by the Presbyterian Mission Press on behalf of the American Bible Society. Copies are held by Cambridge University and National Taiwan University. Octavo in 4 parts. Original brown moiré cloth over limp card covers spine lettered in gilt. Handwritten note to ffep in near contemporary hand noting "Rev'd Marshall D. Smith Passaic New Jersey. Very rare and therefore to be carefully used and returned to the owner." Small thumbnail sized chip at bottom outer margin of title page with no loss of text. Some light soiling to first half of the text but pages otherwise clean and free from marking soiling or staining. Top edge brightly gilt. Other edges uncut. Bound in early 20th Century polished calf by Pratt with gilt panels of triple gilt-ruled borders and gilt acorn decorations in corners. Original spine with six gilt decorated compartments and two black morocco spine labels relaid. Extremities lightly rubbed. Griffiths 1789/8. A spectacular and uncut copy of the rarest Anglican/Episcopal Prayer Book. The Protestant Episcopal Church was founded at a convention at Philadelphia in 1785. After the American Revolution a new American Prayer Book was proposed and printed in an edition of 4000 copies by a Philadelphia printer. This edition was printed in a very limited number for the use of the bishops in England. Only fifty 50 copies were printed. "A rarer book connected with American church history can hardly be named." 1880183225China: c.1880. China on Thomas Hardy's doorstep Labels on both faces indicate that this artefact of missionary printing was owned by Henry Joseph Moule 1825-1904 a close friend of Thomas Hardy and the brother of two prominent China missionaries. Moule was the first curator of the Dorset County Museum where this woodblock was perhaps displayed to a curious public. Moule's seven brothers included George Evans Moule 1828-1912 consecrated the first Bishop of Mid-China in 1880 and Arthur Evans Moule 1838-1916 who was active in Ningbo and Shanghai and who also wrote prolifically on Chinese history and current affairs. The primary face has the text of the fourth to tenth commandments as given in Deuteronomy and the carving employs a songti character style with serifs. The largest of the labels reads "Block from which a page of a book has been printed; viz. part of the Ten Commandments. Printing is a much older art in China than in Europe but always was and is performed as by the pre-Gutenberg European printers viz. from wood-cut blocks. A rough block with wood-engraving tools accompanies this block; and also an inking brush and a printing pad. The press is used China." Moule is named on a small label on the reverse. Single wooden block 165 x 210 mm engraved in 8-columns on primary face one column of characters and page subdivisions on secondary face 3 manuscript labels the largest covering upper-left quadrant of primary face. Full leather binding with simple blind decoration Dulled gilt lettering "Verona 1531" and decoration on the banded spine missing spine-label. Both covers are well worn with loss at corners and spine-ends front cover is detached leather on rear joint is wholly split and leather over rear cover is lifting at split. Inner front cover has purple stamp from Ampleforth Abbey a small pasted label and a short reference number in pencil the paper underneath is darkened and stained. Title page is darkened and also stained at the edges. Block edges are red which is darkened. First page of text has decorated header and first paragraph in red. Pages are bright and text is clear. There are some underlinings against some text in black ink which has faded to brown and occasional notes in Latin or Greek in the margins in the same ink. Pagination: Nothing before Greek and Latin title-page; introduction/ dedication in Latin and Greek 7; contents in Greek 6 -first gathering containing title introduction/dedcation and contents is detached -; text 152; printing details 1; frep 3. Badger 1834-36. & Charles Jacobs of Gilmanton. <br/><br/>Isaiah Thomas whom Benjamin Franklin called 'the Baskerville of America' was one of the notable publishers during the early days of the Republic.He made every effort to ensure accuracy of the text by comparing some thirty different editions and having the text carefully examined by several clergymen and others who compared it with eight Bibles - Herbert 1353." The First Illustrated Bible printed in America is the 1791 folio Bible by Isaiah Thomas "The most sumptuous American Bible of the eighteenth century" : thus this quarto-sized version of that work is the Second Illustrated Bible printed in America and the first Royal Quarto Bible in English published in American both editions were announced as "completed" on the same date altho vol. 2 of the folio was still in progress. Rumball-Petre 172; Sabin 5173 variant; O'Callaghan pp. 40-42; Hills 30. Evans 23185 states that some copies were issued with no Concordance and 48 additional plates. This state however has only two copperplates as frontispieces of the 50 copperplate engravings from the folio edition plates 29 & 48 . Included are 200 pages of Tables Apocrypha and Family Records Index etc. The subscription price was $7 but half the price could be paid in wheat rye Indian corn butter or pork! It is believed that 1500 copies of each format were printed. "The two Thomas Bibles of 1791 were without doubt far in advance of any other publications of the same kind that had appeared in America in point of typography excellence of paper binding and general execution - Wright EARLY BIBLES OF AMERICA." Later Victorian binding of black morocco with plain dark green pebbled-cloth boards gilt lettering to the spine. Head/tail of the spine chipped otherwise very good. Contents remarkably good clean and tight with a little light pencil highlighting and ticks to margins. All printed marginal notes present and untrimmed with the exception of the final two leaves where a couple of marginal notes are mimimally cropped; last leaf with very small 4 x 3 mm chip to fore-edge very light staining to title page. A very good copy. A reply by the Deven and Cornwall Ministers to Thomas Hutton's "Reasons for Refusal of Subscription to the booke of Common Praier." Oxford 1605. While this book appears in a number of major libraries we have been unable to find any auction records or any catalogue records. 1638022099Cambridge: Thomas Buck and Roger Daniel 1638. . Your chance to own a complete Bible apart from one leaf printed only 27 years after the King James Version first came out - a huge one 15 inches tall similar to the pictures you may have seen of original 1611 editions. Hinges and extremities have wear and tear and clasps are missing. Early and late pages have furrows perhaps suggesting moisture issues long ago. A few small holes to pages appear to have been caused by rust and therefore presumably contamination of the paper by specks of ferrous metal. There are no extra materials apart from the translators' addresses to King James and to the reader at the front and the Apocrypha located between the Old and New Testaments. No endpapers - inside of front cover has old stamps of Thomas Garbutt Linen and Woollen Draper Barnard Castle likely from 100 or more years ago. The date of 1638 which is printed on the NT title page has also been added in an old but plain style in black pen at the bottom of the illustrated main title page which is a bit worn and grubby. Page 611-612 middle of Hosea is missing seeming at first glance not to have been present but in fact some tiny fragments do appear at the spine. The last page of text is dilapidated but the text of it seems near complete. Some old repairs have been made to borders of pages by pasting on paper which mostly seems of a similar nature to the original and in general when doing this care seems to have been taken not to obscure the text. The exterior is not elaborate but has a 3 inch long rhombus shaped area of gilt decoration to the middle of each of the two boards; there is no lettering or decoration to the spine. There are pictorial drop initials at the beginning of each book of the Bible and Apocrypha. This specific printing is said to have remained the standard text until the printing of Dr Paris' Cambridge edition of 1762. Leather. Average. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Main title in red and black each sermon also is prefaced by a separate title in some cases also a dedication or other additional leaves. Also contains three additional sermons not listed on the title-page including one in St Margaret's Westminster on June 28 1660 the day of Thanksgivings for the Return of Charles II. Full leather binding. Covers are rubbed bumped and worn and the front cover is detached the spine is almost entirely missing and whar remains is darkened curled and hardened. Internal binding has significant separation in Sermon XII but is just holding here elsewhere internal binding is sound. The front end-paper darkened torn and curled has name and date 1766 and note referring to last sermon also name date and note of 1707. Title page and pages are a little darkened but are otherwise clean except the last sermon which has significant underlining presumable by the 1766 owner. Sermons contained are: I. 1891184661London: British and Foreign Bible Society 1891. Used on missionary service in Penang A scarce missionary imprint: an early edition of the first New Testament in the Hokkien dialect of Xiamen and southern Fujian province. This was the copy of Daniel Davies Moore among the first Methodist missionaries in Penang which had an established community of Hokkien speakers. The translation was the work of four members of the English Presbyterian Mission: William Macgregor William S. Swanson Hugh Cowie and James L. Maxwell. The first edition was printed in Scotland for private circulation in 1873 and the same plates were used to produce editions in 1880s and 1890s. Moore 1856-1946 "left Canada for Singapore in April 1891 as a foreign missionary. There he was commissioned by the newly established Methodist Church in Singapore to start work in Penang for the English-speaking community. In July 1891 he started the first English service at the Penang Town Hall. The following month the first sacramental service for eight people was conducted at the rented residence of the missionaries at Carnavon Street" Dictionary of Christian Biography in Asia. His ownership inscription "Davies Moore Penang Dec. 7th 1892" is on the first blank verso. Octavo. 1928177397Shanghai: Presbyterian Mission Press 1928. First edition in Chinese first printing untraced institutionally. The translator Ada Haven Mateer was an accomplished linguist missionary and theologian. Here she adapts L. M. Cross's well-known prayer devotional to a vocabulary of no more than 1000 characters aiming to aid in Republican-era campaigns to eradicate illiteracy. Mateer 1850-1936 was one of the foreigners trapped in the Legation Quarter during the Boxer Rebellion. Her Siege Days 1903 remains a much-quoted account of the events of summer 1900. Provenance: Shanghai Korean Christians Association with its contemporary stamp on the title page and shelf label on the spine. Octavo. Publisher's full brown calf spines in six compartments separated by raised bands gilt lettering and borders on burgundy labels in two compartments floral gilt tooling in remainder gilt and blind-stamped borders on covers all edges red marbled endpapers gilt dentelles. Gilbert Burnet 1643 1715 was a Scottish theologian and historian and Bishop of Salisbury Sarum. He was fluent in Dutch French Latin Greek and Hebrew. Burnet was respected as a cleric a preacher and an academic as well as a writer and historian. He was associated with the Whig party. In the mid-1670s a French translation of Nicholas Sanders' De origine et progressu schismatio Anglicani libri tres 1585 appeared. Sanders attacked the English Reformation as a political act carried on by a corrupt king. Several of Burnet's friends wished him to publish a rebuttal of the work so in 1679 his first volume of The History of the Reformation of the Church of England was published. This covered the reign of Henry VIII; the second volume 1681 covered the reign of Elizabeth and the Elizabethan Religious Settlement; the third volume 1714 consisted of corrections and additional material.1 His literary reputation was greatly enhanced by this publication. The Parliament of England voted thanks for Burnet after the publication of the first volume and in 1680 the University of Oxford awarded Burnet the degree of Doctor of Divinity on the advice of William Sancroft Archbishop of Canterbury. For over a century this was the standard reference work in the field although Catholics disputed some of its content. Thomas Babington Macaulay describes Burnet in relation to the king he served William of Orange: "When the doctor took liberties which was not seldom the case his patron became more than usually cold and sullen and sometimes uttered a short dry sarcasm which would have struck dumb any person of ordinary assurance. In spite of such occurrences however the amity between this singular pair continued with some temporary interruptions till it was dissolved by death. Indeed it was not easy to wound Burnet's feelings. His self-complacency his animal spirits and his want of tact were such that though he frequently gave offence he never took it." - History of England Vol. 2 Ch 7. . First edition of this scarce Protestant missionary imprint of which we have traced only one other copy issued for the use of Westerners proselytizing in Yangzhou and across Jiangsu province. The text includes a corresponding English-language index of first lines. This volume was owned by James Markwick a missionary with the China Inland Mission in Yangzhou and has his Christmas Day 1878 ownership inscription on the front pastedown and title page. Markwick has made several annotations and marks internally including a table of "corresponding numbers of hymns in this and the Ning-po hymn book." The China Inland Mission established a station in the region in the 1860s. Copies were issued bound in cloth or in the case of the other known example our stock number 187498 in the Chinese style with wrappers. Small octavo. Original blue cloth yellow coated endpapers. First edition of this informative handbook to Fuzhou the newest station of the Methodist Episcopal Mission compiled for the use of recruits to the cause and for Sunday-school education back home. The text includes extracts from a report by the Royal Navy officer Captain Richard Collinson 1811-1883 who surveyed the Fujian coast after the First Opium War and six chapters of material drawing on the writings of the British missionary George Smith later the first bishop of Hong Kong. Provenance: Inscribed by Robert Samuel Maclay 1824-1907 one of the early American presbyterian missionaries in Fuzhou "To Josefa Gabri from R.S.M. Fuh-chau China Dec. 25th 1849." As described in the preface Maclay and a few others from the Methodist Episcopal Mission left New York for China on 15 October 1847. The recipient is untraced but was likely a member of the Dominican Order which also had a presence in Fujian province. Small octavo.
