[Ippologia-.Giolito] (cm.20,4) Buona piena pergamena dell'epoca, semirigida. cc.34nn., pp.969 + 1 p. con il registro + 1c. con al recto la marca tipografica del Giolito con la fenice. Elegante corsivo, vari capolettera figurati e ornati. E' questo uno dei più completi e importanti trattati di ippologia che mai sia stato stampato, una specie di enciclopedia ippica. I primi due libri sono dedicati alla storia del cavallo nella letteratura e nell'arte, gli altri trattano della natura del cavallo, allevamento, maneggio, equitazione igiene, malattie, e relative cure. Cicognara 4596 la definisce: "opera la più vasta che conosciamo in questa materia". e Bongi: "vi si trova raccolto tutto ciò che era già stato scritto sul cavallo dagli storici, poeti, naturalisti, maniscalchi e cavallerizzi di ogni età e nazione". la prima edizione apparve nel 1566, questa nostra ricorretta e ampliata, è assolutamente rarissima, manca a molti repertori consultati, compreso Adams, Bm.Stc, Choix, Graesse, Brunet, nonchè ad Huth "bibliog.of Hippology" e a Mennesier De La Lance "Bibliogr. hippique". Lievissima traccia di alone al margine di qualche carta altrimenti esemplare molto bello, nitido e genuino. Il Census nazionale Iccu registra solo 9 copie nelle biblioteche italiane. Medico di origine veneta morto nel 1460, esercitò a Padova anche come insegnante presso la locale e prestigiosa Università di medicina, dove dai documenti risulta professore dal 1422 al 1441. La sua opera Consilia, stampata nei primi decenni del secolo successivo, è molto conosciuta e apprezzata. Viene anche ricordato per l’attività di chirurgo ed esperto di anatomia: si dice che abbia eseguito personalmente quattordici dissezioni complete. Trattandosi di uno studioso quattrocentesco, i suoi interessi botanici sono strettamente legati alla sua attività di medico nella preparazione dei medicamenti che provenivano per la maggior parte dal mondo vegetale. Il prestigio dei Consilia durerà per alcuni secoli e molti saranno gli autori di medicina che attingeranno alle sue informazioni scientifiche e alla struttura del libro, organizzato sapientemente nella discussione di 305 casi clinici comprendenti tutta la materia medica conosciuta, chirurgia e anatomia comprese. Doctor of Venetian origin who died in 1460, he also practiced in Padua as a teacher at the local and prestigious University of Medicine, where the documents prove him as professor from 1422 to 1441. His work Consilia, printed in the first decades of the following century, is well known and appreciated. He is also remembered for his activity as a surgeon and anatomy expert: he is said to have personally performed fourteen complete dissections. Being a fifteenth-century scholar, his botanical interests are closely linked to his activity as a doctor in the preparation of medicines that mostly came from the plant world. The prestige of the Consilia will last for a few centuries and many medical authors will draw on its scientific information and on the structure of the book, expertly organized in the discussion of 305 clinical cases including all known materia medica, surgery and anatomy included.

Al front. la mitica marca edit. che fu già di Vincenzo Valgrisi del serpente attorcigliato a bastone a forma di tau sostenuto da mani uscenti da nuvole. Piena pergamena rigida con unghie, elegante titolo con grande fregio calligafico a penna anticamente scritto al dorso, 4 nervi appena sensibili, tagli picchiettati. Antica annotazione a penna di libraio o di proprietario al verso del piatto e al verso della prima pagina bianca; timbro di privata appartenenza alla prima facciata bianca. Antichi segni a penna a qualche margine. Lievi ombre da gora e buchetto solo alla prima carta bianca, se no fresco ed immacolato ad ampi margini e bei caratteri corsivi. Rara seconda edizione (la prima uscì da De Franceschi nel 1562), Una delle pochissime rimasteci dal Rinascimento su questo argomento, l'opera più nota di MARINELLI, medico del modenese (scrisse anche un trattato di ginecologia) e letterato, soggiornò a Venezia, dove probabilmente morì; gran conoscitore del latino e del greco (pretende di aver tratto il libro "dalle scritture di medici Greci, Arabi,& Latini" ma le formule e ricette, ben più moderne, lo smentiscono), Diviso in quattro libri, è una miniera di consigli di bellezza basati su nozioni di medicina e di cosmetica. il libro primo tratta i difetti del corpo e i rimedi volti ad attenuarli; il secondo e il terzo, la bellezza e la cura dei capelli e del viso; il quarto, la cura della gola, del collo, del petto, delle mani e del resto del corpo. Acquaforte misure: mm 91 x 123 Pittore e incisore italiano. Venne indirizzato allo studio del disegno dal padre Giovanni Andrea modesto pittore paesaggista, ben presto però Bartolomeo preferì studiare copiando le opere dei grandi maestri come Guido Reni e Giulio Romano presenti nelle chiese di Genova. Intorno al 1650 entrò nella bottega di Valerio Castello (Genova 1624 - 1659) principale esponente del barocco genovese. A differenza del maestro che si dedicò soprattutto all'affresco, Biscaino praticò soprattutto la pittura su tela e l'incisione. Si conoscono circa una quarantina di lastre per le quali sembra abbia tratto ispirazione dalle opere del maestro Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, detto il Grechetto (Genova 1609 – Mantova 1664). In questa stampa vine rappresentato Dio Padre che scende dal cielo per benedire gli uomini. Viene raffigurato come un uomo anziano dalla barba lunga, con sguardo benevolo fissa un punto sulla sinistra della composizione. Egli è avvolto in una toga, rigonfia dal vento e riccamente panneggiata con giochi chiaroscurali che accentuano il movimento e danno dinamicità alla composizione. A precederlo c'è la colomba della pace, nell'angolo in basso a destra e in alto a sinistra sono descritti i volti di due putti. Lo sfondo è riempito mediante linee parallele disposte a raggiera che creano un'atmosfera solenne. Impressione eccellente. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Minimi margini oltre la battuta del rame, fatta eccezione del margine sinistro rifilato. Stato Unico. Bibliografia: T.I.B., 47/041.

In-16 p. (mm. 172x101), brossura orig. (picc. manc. al dorso), pp. 58, con fregio xilografato al frontespizio. Rara "prima edizione italiana" di questo libretto stampato a Napoli. L’autore era giunto a Napoli al seguito di Garibaldi che lo aveva nominato Direttore onorario delle Belle Arti. Spirito vulcanico, vi fondò il giornale ‘L’Indipendente’ e si occupò degli scavi di Pompei. Il libretto fu scritto a commento di un processo che aveva appena concluso il clamoroso giallo di un omicidio: vittima, un orologiaio napoletano, tal Francesco Ruffa. L'assassinio era avvenuto nell’agosto del 1862, un anno dopo l’Unità d’Italia, quando i codici non erano stati ancora unificati. Solo in Toscana era già stata abrogata la pena di morte mentre vigeva ancora a Napoli. Di fatto, però, i magistrati napoletani - aperti a quel rinnovamento culturale e morale che sul solco di Cesare Beccaria propugnava l'abolizione della pena capitale - ricorrevano sistematicamente a stratagemmi e a cavilli per non applicarla, anche a costo di forzature paradossali. Così, nel caso dell'omicidio Ruffa, la giuria accordò agli assassini le attenuanti generiche per poterli condannare ai lavori forzati, anziché alla fucilazione. Contro questa sentenza insorse Alessandro Dumas, che in polemica elegante ma dura con i magistrati scrisse "La pena di morte e il giurì napoletano". (dall’articolo di V. A. Stagno su L'Onda Razzista, 1983). Testo ben conservato, con ex libris di Cesare Correnti e la dedica autografa al frontespizio “De la part de l’auteur / A Dumas”.

George Buchanan (1827-1906), surgeon, son of Moses Steven Buchanan (1796?1860) surgeon to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and lecturer on anatomy in the Portland Street medical school from 1836 to 1841, when he was appointed professor of anatomy in the Andersonian University. George Buchanan was educated at the University of Glasgow and went on to study under his father and others at the Andersonian University, he became M.D. St. Andrews and L.R.C.S. Edinburgh, and in 1852 fellow of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. "In early life Buchanan volunteered to have chloroform anaesthesia demonstrated on himself, when his father performed a minor operation on him. He began to practise in Glasgow, but in 1856 he went to the Crimea as a civil surgeon. He returned to Glasgow at the end of the war, and was one of the first to practise there purely as a consulting surgeon. In 1860, when he succeeded his father as professor of anatomy in the Andersonian University, he was also appointed surgeon to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He soon became known as a bold and skilful operator, and as a good teacher. He was the first to point out (in 1865 and 1867) the possibility and safety of removing half the tongue in cases of cancer, and he was among the first surgeons to remove the upper jaw (in 1864 and 1869). He gave reasons for preferring lithotrity to lithotomy in operating for stone in the adult male, in 1868, and he was the first to perform ovariotomy successfully in the west of Scotland, in 1863."?(Oxford DNB). 1.
