A history of Indians of the new world detailing their life and culture at the time of the Spanish Conquest. 1870030898LONDON: George Bell & Sons 1870 A nice set of the second edition of Morris's History of British Birds. In 6 volumes with original decorative cloth bindings and 365 hand coloured plates as called for. The bindings are all clean with bright gilt pictures of birds to each front board and gilt titles and decoration to spine. There is some wear: volume I has some cloth splitting at the hinges and splitting at the rear endpaper with rubbing to corners; volumes II III and IV have very slight pulling to top and bottom of spine and a little rubbing at corners; volume V has very small splits at the top and bottom of the spine; and volume VI has a 1 inch tear at the top of the spine with no loss and scuffing at the corners. Internally all have the original endpapers; the first section including the frontispiece is becoming loose on volumes I II and III; volume IV is sound but the stitching is looser than on the others. There is a little spotting to some plates and text pages but in general the contents are very clean looking unread and the plates are bright and well coloured. A few plates in volume III lack tissue guards and the plate of the Whitethroat is present but detached. Volume 5 has 4 plates present but detached: the Little Stint Schinz's Sandpiper Pochard and Polish Swan - and pages 131-134 the same. A few pages have been roughly opened and a few have darkening to edges. Overall the set is complete with bright bindings and well coloured plates. George Bell & Sons hardcover

Adams' refusal to grant letters of recommendation from his church to the Payson church of which Rev. Fairchild was pastor because of accusations of immoral conduct against Fairchild" Cohen. The Payson church was thus deprived of "the fellowship of sister churches." Fairchild had allegedly seduced a young woman Rhoda Davidson of Edgecomb Maine while she was a domestic in his family. She had a child and nominated Fairchild as the father. Ecclesiastical trials ensued. Fairchild claimed that rival ministers one of whom was Reverend Adams had defamed him by calling him an habitual libertine and adulterer. Adams as Fairchild puts it "publicly said that there was more guilt resting on my head than on the head of any man who walks the streets of Boston or words to that effect." <br /> The Payson Church Committee examines the relevant documents and concludes "We clearly saw that no guilt had been proved against him and therefore felt bound to regard him as innocent wondering how any human creature could have a heart to add another grain to his load of suffering or inflict one fresh wound on his wife and children. Comprising the complete dramatic works of Renaissance playwrights Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher this set of eleven volumes includes bibliographic and performance notes as well as a biographical memoir of the dramatists by Reverend Alexander Dyce. With a frontispiece to the first two volumes. Includes their collaborative plays The Woman Hater Cupid's Revenge and The Noble Gentleman. In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spines. Externally generally sound. Volumes III V and XI are missing a spine label. The joint front joint has failed to volumes I II VI VIII and X so the front boards are detached. The front joint to volumes III and IV and the rear joint of volume I are extremely tender and may the boards may detached with further handling. The calf is torn to the rear joints of volumes III V VI VII IX and X but has been repaired. The front joint of volume VII is starting but firm and both the front and rear joints are starting but firm to volume XI. The rear hinge is starting and is a little tender to volumes VII and VIII. Internally firmly bound with a little strain to the rear of volume III. Aside from the plates pages are generally bright and clean with some occasional light spots and the odd bit of marginalia in pencil. Good Edward Moxon hardcover
