The Complaint, or Night-Thoughts on Life, Death, & Immortality est l'oeuvre phare du Révérend Edward Young, un poème épique, méditatif et philosophique rédigé en vers blancs. Le poème a été écrit après une série de deuils personnels dévastateurs pour l'auteur : le décès de son beau-fils, Narcissa, le décès de sa femme, Elizabeth, et le décès de son gendre, Philander. Ces pertes successives ont plongé Young dans une profonde mélancolie, qui est le moteur central de l'œuvre. Le poème se présente comme le journal nocturne d'une âme en deuil. L'œuvre est divisée en neuf parties, appelées "Nights" (Nuits). Notre ensemble de deux volumes (Vol. I & II) regroupe les premières Nuits (Nuit I à IV, puis Nuit V à IX). Le poème se déroule symboliquement entre minuit et l'aube. L'obscurité est le moment privilégié pour la réflexion solitaire et la confrontation avec la mortalité. Chaque Nuit est une méditation autonome, mais contribue à une progression thématique globale, allant du désespoir à la consolation et à l'espoir. Ce poème, qui a notamment inspiré des philosophes des Lumières (Diderot, Rousseau) s'inscrit dans le mouvement pré-romantique européen. Bon exemplaire.
17753730London: Printed for T.Lowndes 1775 1775. First edition. 4to. 265x210mm. pp. iv 764 10 index. Ten engraved plates frontispiece portrait of the author and a further nine. The verso of the second leaf of preliminaries is numbered vi. Some foxing in places but otherwise internally very good with the plates in excellent condition. Handsomely bound in slightly later red straight-grained morocco upper and lower covers decorated with two double fillet borders in gilt enclosing a continuous "drawer-handle" design in blind and framing a continuous swag and drop border in blind. Spine with five double raised bands decorated in gilt and blind and lettered in gilt to the second and fifth compartment. Edges of the boards decorated in gilt. Turn-ins decorated in gilt with a wavy dotted line and ears of wheat with a flower motif in the corners. All edges gilt. The binding is of a very high standard. It is unsigned but the tooling and overall design conforms to the work of the German emigré binders and we would tentatively attribute the binding to either Christian Kalthoeber or John Bohn and date it to the 1790s or the very early years of the 1800s. A previous owner has inscribed the verso of the front free endpaper "Bound by Edwards of Halifax ". This seems unlikely but it is possible given the subject matter of the book and the links between Edwards and the German emigré binders that this copy did pass through Edwards's hands. John Watson 1723-1783 was that perfect eighteenth-century combination of clergyman and antiquary. He was the curate of Halifax between 1750 and 1754 and retained links with the town throughout his life. Starting with Druidical remains and moving through Roman affairs Watson brings the reader up to the eighteenth century. He covers the history of Halifax and provides details of the main buildings in the town as well as exploring fascinating byways such as "Remarks on the Dialect of Halifax""Vocabulary of Uncommon Words used in Halifax" and "A Catalogue of Plants Growing in the Parish of Halifax". The spine is in beautiful condition- with five raised bands. The boards maybe original as they are a slightly different colour and have more signs of wear and scuffing. The end papers seem to be newer paper than the book contents. Rest of the book is original. Some chipping to page edges and some marks including what look like finger prints to page edges. Covers & corners slightly rubbed. Internally there is a little intermittent light spotting but generally a clean and bright copy now housed in a custom slipcase made by The Heritage Bindery. Many years in the making this large and finely printed volume traces classical mythology in Roman art and literature. "Remains an agreeable book owing to the urbanity of its old-fashioned scholarship the justice of some incidental observations and its affluent stores of quotation; and as an intellectual if heterogeneous banquet may be compared with the Deipnosophists of Athenaeus. Single worm hole to outer margin of first 50 pages of vol 1. Although most definitely a pair the patterning on the leather of the two volumes is different. Page edges red. This complete two-volume first U.S. edition of 1796 is bound in contemporary marble calf. The bindings feature gilt ruled spines with rectangular gilt-printed burgundy spine labels and circular gilt-printed black spine labels. Condition is good plus. The period bindings remain fully intact the boards still firmly connected. As might be expected the bindings show age and wear the boards and spines variously scuffed the corners worn through. The text blocks have a slight swell the boards a slight outward warp. The contents of both volumes are notably clean the endpapers browned the contents less so. Spotting is minimal appearing substantially confined to the endpapers and page edges. The same single clearly vintage owner name is inked to the upper right corner of each title page. <br /> <br />This U.S. edition RE-PRINTED FOR RICHARD LEE in Philadelphia in 1796 by DUNNING HYER AND PALMER PRINTERS followed the British edition of 1795 J. Ridgeway London. This work was the product of the incarceration of the author - Reverend William Winterbotham 1763-1829. Winterbothams prosecution was a celebrated instance of overreaction by the authorities through nervousness in the wake of the French Revolution. <br /> <br />The sixth of fifteen children Winterbotham left school after an argument with the schoolmaster and thereafter apprenticed to a silversmith. He eventually started in business for himself as a silver buckle-maker but illness forced a temporary return to his parents. His early dissolute life changed when he underwent conversion. In 1787 he began to preach and in 1789 became a Baptist. In this newly found zealous life he ran afoul of the politics of the day. <br /> <br />In a sermon on 5 November 1792 on the double anniversary of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot and the revolution of 1688 Winterbotham made reference to the French Revolution and to contemporary abuses as he saw it of the contract between king and people. This aroused local feeling and a prosecution was talked of. In an attempt to put matters right he preached a sermon on 18 November but on 25 and 26 July 1793 he was tried at the Exeter assizes for both sermons and found guilty. The result was a significant fine and imprisonment most of which he spent at Newgate prison. <br /> <br />It was in Newgate that Winterbotham wrote An Historical Geographical and Philosophical View of the Chinese Empire as well as An Historical Geographical Commercial and Philosophical View of the American United States. Upon release from Newgate in November 1797 Winterbotham returned to preaching. He was publicly ordained in 1801. He was frequently invited to preach around the country and in 1812 was one of the signatories to the formation of the Baptist Union.
