This work contains a portion of the king's autobiography the original of which is now lost. Some controversy exists over who actually wrote the book and it is variously attributed to a number of authors; Clarke 1766-1834 the biographer of Lord Nelson was certainly involved in its publication. James 1633-1701 the second surviving son of Charles I served as James II King of England and Ireland and James VII King of Scotland 1685-1688 when he was deposed by the Glorious Revolution. Some foxing but a very good copy. With ornamental tailpieces at the end of every chapter. First and only edition of a rare work on Calcutta and Hinduism written by a Christian missionary. The author was particularly interested in the teachings of the Brahmo Samaj an important monotheïstic reformist movement that started in Calcutta in 1828. Members of this movement and Christians regularly clashed leading to heated debates. However Reverend Cesary who is otherwise unknown tries to change misconceptions about the Brahmo Samaj and find common ground.The work is divided in 5 parts which explain Hinduism and Brahmo doctrines describe a journey from the author from Calcutta to Bombay offer a charming description of 19th-century Calcutta and explain daily living of Hindus. Together the different parts offer a fine portrayal of the late 19th-century socio-religious landscape of North India in general and Calcutta in particular.With the stamp of the Kapuzinerkloster Falkenburg on the first flyleaf. The edges and corners of the boards are slightly scuffed and the head and tail of the spine are bumped. The flyleaves are slightly foxed all leaves are creased near the spine and the work is slightly browned throughout. First edition. 4 vols. 4to viii 281; 158; viii 419; viii 281 pp. Vols. 1-2 edited by Bustamante from the MS: Historia civil y politica de Mexico; vols. 3-4 constitute the editor's supplement. The work is ofrten bound in two volumes but here we have it in four. Cavo was a Jesuit a native of Mexico and expelled from the country along with the others of his order in 1767. Although he made a great effort to return to Mexico later in his life dissociating himself from the Jesuits and travelling to Spain to do so but he did not succeed. The rest of his life was spent in Rome where he died in great poverty in 1803. Beristain de Souza has almost nothing to say about him as his work was not discovered until the 1830's when Bustamante ran across the manuscript in a private episcopal library and theeafter took charge of having it published with his additions.The first two books are Cavo's up to the expulsion and despite the title is a history of viceregal Mexico City.Wikipedia says: "The work is not a history in the usual sense. It is better described as the annals of Mexico City with particular emphasis on the development of political ideas. The book also contains details of colonial life that are not available in any other source. Cavo shows signs of Mexican not Spanish colonial nationality and for this reason is considered a forerunner of Mexican independence. Porrua Diccionario states that his was the first history of Viceregal Mexico. The last two volumes are by Bustamante himself an important Mexican historian after independence associated with the liberal party and they are a continuation up to 1821 being of a broader scope and containing some important documents also not published before. First edition extremely rare large paper copy of the first annual in this series which was to be continued up to 1840. The fashionable preacher and writer William Caunter was fascinated by India and wrote this mix of information and entertainment probably for the family members who had remained in Britain and where not over in India. Daniell's contributions make this a very handsome publication on India under the Raj. The normal format measures just over 20 by 14 cm wereas this issue measures over 24 by 16 cm. This issue is on better velin paper and the engravings - not foxed as often - are on mounted India paper with tissue guards. This annual appeared between 1834 and 1840 8 volumes with two volumes dated 1839 as a gift book for British people who had members of their family serving in India. unknown

Original full olive morocco elaborately blocked in gilt and blind; all edges gilt; leather lightly scuffed and a little rubbed at the extremities with the spine lightly sunned; plates and adjacent leaves foxed as often; stitching slightly shaken; tiny area of loss in the gutter of three consecutive leaves I1-3 a trifling production flaw; a few other minor signs of age and handling; some tissue-guards missing but no bad thing as those that remain are foxed; a very good copy in an impressive publisher's binding of the period. The first volume of this lavish illustrated annual which incorporates a fictionalised travelogue of a journey through India descriptions of important landmarks and short histories and biographies. Publication ceased after the 1840 issue. <p>Daniell's drawings date from his travels in India in the 1780s and 1790s and Caunter's text may also be in part a sensationalised version of Daniell's journal see 'Bengal Past and Present' Volume 25 1923. <p>Faxon: 'Literary Annuals and Gift-Books' 1655.
