Reverend William Gilpin 1724- 804 was an English artist Anglican cleric schoolmaster and author best known as one of the originators of the idea of the picturesque style of landscape painting. In 1768 Gilpin published his popular "Essay on Prints" where he defined the picturesque as"that kind of beauty which is agreeable in a picture" and began to expound his "principles of picturesque beauty" based largely on his knowledge of landscape painting. During the late 1760s and 1770s Gilpin traveled extensively in the summer holidays and applied these principles to the landscapes he saw committing his thoughts and spontaneous sketches to notebooks. This particular watercolor study features the High Force waterfall at the River Tees in Durham England with two figures in the foreground surrounded by lush landscape. Gilpin brought attention to the area with his sketching journals influencing tourism and commenting on the sublime and beauty of nature. Bright and unmarred original painting. No visible wear. Single leaf color wash and ink with sepia tones mounted on board includes monograph embossed on right corner 10.25x7.5 unknown

The bindings have some nicking and chipping to them. The surface area is quite pitted. Still attractive. Each volume has vignettes and historiated initials to the beginning of each homily. Each homily has its own title page and date. These were obviously printed as separate homilies and bound together here. Text in French. Vol 1. 1707 4th Edition. This volume has had damage to the bottom edge looks as if perhaps mice before binding or similar. As a result the text block has been shaved to the base not affecting text. This has resulted in the book being 2.5 cm shorter than the other two volumes. Ce volume a eu des dommages sur le bord inférieur on dirait peut-être des souris avant la reliure ou similaire . En conséquence le bloc de texte a été rasé jusqu'à la base n'affectant pas le texte. Hardcovers two volumes uniformly bound in full cream vellum with the title embossed in gilt within gilt decorated bronze panels on the spines. The cream covers are slightly stained. There is a spot of rubbing to the bottom of the first volume's front hinge with damage to the vellum of the rear cover of that volume. The title page of the first volume is printed in red and black with the collation as follows volume 1: half title title with printer's mark pages i-lxxxiii 1 pages 1-217 220-221 220-221 224-225 224-630 & 1-34. Pages 218-219 and 222-223 are skipped in the numbering without any loss of text; pages 220-221 and 224-225 are repeated in the numbering. The second volume's collation is as follow: title with printer's mark pages iii-xxv 1 pages 1-192 1-4 193-609 & 1-31. Each volume is illustrated with an engraved headpiece by Carlo Orsolini c.1703-c.1780. In volume 1 the Creation is pictured and in volume 2 the Annunciation. Each volume is further enhanced with pictorial initials and tailpieces. There is a tear to the inner edge of the folding plan not affecting the image. The first volume's text block is cracked opposite the title page with a tiny tear to the bottom of the inner edge of that volume's slightly pulled title signature. There are remnants of an early brown paper stamp to the verso of the first volume's title page resulting in a tiny hole to that page. There is offsetting to the first three leaves of the second volume from a paper stamp which once adhered to the verso of that volume's title page. There is occasional staining and minor foxing throughout. Very good. The work was first published in French in 1718. It is here translated into Italian by the Venetian Carmelite Arcangelo Agostini 1660-1746 writing under his pseudonym Selvaggio Canturani. It is a history of the Old and New Testaments up to the destruction of Jerusalem.The folding plan of Herod's Temple is accompanied by 4 pages describing its numbered sites. The title translates in English to "The Second Adam Suffering For The First Adam And For All His Descendants. Jesus Dying For The Sins Of Men. Preached In The Form Of Meditations." In French. First edition appears to be from 1692. This is probable 5th Edition. Date of publication not stated but the 4th edition was published in 1709 and the 6th edition in 1731. Final page includes a Privilege from the Society of Jesus dated 1714. Thus publication date was between 1714-1731. A 1.75 inch square cut out of top right corner of title page yet title letters untouched except for a missing "D" at the end of Second. Intricately detailed engraved frontis. Octavo. Rebound with modern black leather spine and cloth covered boards. Five raised bands and gilt title to spine. Title on spine is misprinted as "Le Secon Adam" consistent with missing letter on title page. Laid paper interior rippled from water damage along top margin throughout most of the book. A rich family album compiled by Lucy Gwendoline Duff grand daughter of the Rev James Grant in the early 20th century preserving family documents printed obituaries and tributes and a fine selection of photographs which together trace the achievements and history of the Grant family dating back to the mid 1700s in the Glenbuchat Badenoch and Towie ares of Aberdeenshire. Much of the album is dedicated to the line of the Rev. James Grant 1822 -1902 great grandson of the Laird and Miss Oliphant a native of Towie Aberdeenshire a graduate of Aberdeen University in 1840 and later minister at Dunoon in 1846 and then Ordiquhill. The Rev. Grant married Katherine Stewart Forbes Watson and they went on to have 9 children listed on the family tree and 5 grandchildren. A hand drawn family tree contains c.45 family names beginning with the Grant and Gordon families who united in the early 1700s through the marriage of the Laird of Tullachgorum of Badenoch a Grant and Miss Oliphant of Auchavaich Glenbuchat a Gordon. Seemingly compiled by a grand daughter of the Rev. Grant Lucy Gwendoline Duff the album provides rich detail revealing the lives of further member of the family and recording the geographical spread of the family throughout Old Morlich Banff Ordiquhill Fordyce Banchory Colinton Edinburgh America John Grant b.1759 'went to America maybe father of General Grant' and later Manchester and London. The stories of many family members include those of the Rev. James Grant's sons John Forbes Watson Grant and Lachlan Gordon Duff Grant and many of the women in the family including his grand daughter Lucy Gwendoline Duff. Lisboa occidental: na officina de Pascoal da Sylva impressor de Sua Magestade. M. DCCXIX. 1719 "Com todas as licenças necessarias." 12mo. signatures A-Z-12 Aa-10. 19 ff 522 & 6 ff. index. Contemporary limp vellum. Text block very nearly detached from the binding the connection is now dependent on a bit of sewing at the lower headband. Two short clusters of leaves with minor worm tracks. Lacks two leaves -- R2 and almost all of leaf Aa2 of which just an upper corner remains. Rare. Not in OCLC. The author Francisco de Mattos was born in 1636 in Lisbon where he entered the Jesuit order in 1652. He traveled to the Northeast of Brazil to make his noviciate in Bahia -- returned to Portugal where Padre Mattos served as Procurador-general for the S.J. Upon his return to Brazil Padre Mattos became rector of the Jesuit colleges at Rio de Janeiro and Bahia. He became Provincial Professor of the humanities philosophy and theology and died in Bahia in 1720. This rare little book seems to be a second edition of these "meditações". BLPL cites an edition of this title published in 1717 at the printing office Universidade Évora Portugal. Moraes also describes a more substantial work by Padre Francisco de Mattos -- a chronological biography of the founder of his order published the previous year with an imprint identical to our work printed by Pascoal da Sylva in Lisboa occidental. see Vida chronologica de S. Ignacio de Loyola fundador da Companhia de Jesus offerecida ao Illistrissimo Senhor Arcebispo da Bahia . This is a rare contribution to Brazilian literature in every respect save for the formal location in Lisbon of its printer.
