A very scarce work with only one on Jisc held at the University of Oxford Libraries. A transcript of a sermon given at the Gosport Chapel. The sermon was given on the anniversary of St. John the Evangelist on his feast day on the 27th December. Direct from the library of the Lodge of Harmony. Preached by Reverend Brother Parker who was the curate of the chapel. Slip tipped into the recto of the front endpaper 'Extract From the Minute Book of the Lodge of Harmony. December 27th 1814. A Regular Lodge was held to Commemorate the Festival of St. John the Evangelist. The Lodge was opened in the different degrees when it was Consecrated after the usual form by our Rev. Bro. Parker. The Lodge went in procession to Church to hear an appropriate Sermon preached by the aforesaid Rev. Gentleman and returned again in the same order. There were 51 Brethren of the Lodge present and 7 Visitors'. The Fareham Lodge of Harmony was founded in 1796 under charter from the Ancients Grand Lodge. Rebound in a cloth binding. Externally smart. A couple of light marks to the rear board. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots. Puncture marks from former binding close to the gutter. Charles Guay 1845-1922 may be best remembered as the author of the Chronique de Rimouski the first history of the city and its region published in two volumes in 1873 and 1874. Octavo two volumes. In three-quarter brown morocco over marbled paper bindings by Maclehose of Glasgow with gilt titles five raised bands and matching marbled endpapers. 184942915New York: John James Audubon 1849. First edition hand-colored lithograph by John T. Bowen of Philadelphia after John James Audubon. An iconic image of Western Americana from the folio first edition of Audubon's "Quadrupeds of North America" the greatest work of natural history illustration produced in America during the nineteenth century: "As long as our civilization lasts America will be in debt to this genius." Peterson<br/> <br/> This fine plate is from the folio edition of Audubon's The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America which was produced entirely in the United States. The work was Audubon's last and by 1846 he had to hand over the drawing of the final fifty plates to his sons John Woodhouse and Victor Audubon. The production of the Quadrupeds was begun by Audubon and his sons at about the same time as the commercially-successful octavo edition of The Birds of America. Unlike the double-elephant folio the Quadrupeds was produced entirely in the United States. Reese notes that "By 1843 the Audubon family business was a well-oiled machine involving John James his two sons and various in-laws and friends. The octavo Birds was still in production when Bowen began to produce the plates for the folio edition of the Quadrupeds the largest successful color-plate book project of 19th-century America. It took the family five years to publish 150 plates in thirty parts. The massive project was a commercial success thanks to the close management of Victor. There were about three hundred subscribers." Reese Like Birds of America the Viviparous Quadrupeds was intended to be a comprehensive visual catalog of North America animalia with Audubon's focus here shifting from birds to four-legged land mammals. Accompanying each image was correlating didactic text written primarily by Bachman that informed the reader of the animal's habits diet habitat and gestational period. Totaling 150 prints the project was rushed to completion as Audubon's health declined. Emerging in the shadow of its acclaimed predecessor Birds of America the Viviparous Quadrupeds has not received the adequate attention nor recognition it so richly deserves. This image is of a family of American buffalo the most iconic animal indigenous to North America whose presence was integral for Native American life and whose near-extinction spurred on the conservation movement in the US. A letter discussing a meeting The Reverend Baptist Wriothesley Noel 1798-1873 was an English evangelical clergyman of aristocratic family. He was minister of St John's Chapel Bedford Row London from 1827 to 1848 In 1849 he became a Baptist minister and pastor of the nearby John Street Baptist Church in Bloomsbury following the death of the former pastor James Harington Evans. Noel twice served as President of the Baptist Union. A portrait of him hangs outside the library of Regent's Park College Oxford. Size of letter is 190mm x 165mm. Condition is average. Complete in three volumes.Bound by Edmonds & Remnants London with their binder's plate to the rear pastedown of Volume I. This work gives a comprehensive historical account of British coinage from earliest period until the Victorian age. In the third edition which has been corrected enlarged and with the addition of the index. Volumes I and II contain the historical account and index and Volume III contains 160 plates depicting coinage from different monarchical reigns. Also including a folding map. Collated complete. Written by Reverend Rogers Ruding an English cleric and academic during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He was the Vicar of Malden Surrey from 1793 until 1820. This copy came from the library at Julians Park Hertfordshire the previous home of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie 1902-1968. She was an English socialite and through her mother was the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. Rebound in decorative cloth by Edmonds & Remnants London with their binder's plate to the rear pastedown of Volume I. Externally smart with some rubbing to the joints and extremities. Some shelf wear and a few marks to the boards. Joints to Volume III are strained but firm. Internally hinges to Volume III are tender but firm. All volumes firmly bound. Anti-Slavery Manual Containing a Collection of Facts and Arguments on American Slavery 1837 is a foundational document of the American abolitionist movement written by the Reverend La Roy Sunderland 1802-1885 a Methodist Episcopal minister and one of the most energetic and theologically grounded anti-slavery agitators of the antebellum period. Published at a moment of intense national controversy over the question of slavery the volume assembles a systematic compendium of factual evidence statistical documentation legal analysis and moral argument designed to equip abolitionists with the intellectual armament necessary to counter proslavery arguments in the public arena. Sunderland who had co-founded the American Anti-Slavery Society alongside William Lloyd Garrison and Theodore Weld and edited the Methodist abolitionist journal Zion's Watchman approached the subject with the disciplined rhetoric of a preacher trained to marshal Scripture and evidence in service of a moral cause making the Anti-Slavery Manual simultaneously a work of theological argument and empirical documentation. The volume was sufficiently influential to be issued in multiple editions and printings in 1837 alone and is today held in the collections of Harvard University and the Library of Congress.
