Boards lightly scuffed corner tipped with light edge wear minor rubbing to head and foot of spine yet both volumes are solid and firm. Light scattered foxing; most plates and maps are bright and clean. Tidy period owner's signature on prelims of both volumes. Illustrated with all 59 maps plans and steel engraved plates listed in the 'Directions for Placing the Plates' plus one additional plate. Two plates View of Edinburgh and Loch Ken and Castle misbound but present. Vol I: 1 lxxviv 846p frontispiece engraved half-title vignette plus 17 maps 11 plates. Large engraved map of Scotland by G.H Swanston torn and detached from Volume I but extant. The Life and Reign of William the Fourth

An illustrated biography about King William IV documenting his successful reign and personal life written by George Wright. The first edition of this work. Complete in two volumes. William IV was only on the throne for seven years but managed to fill his reign with several reforms including updating the poor law restricting child labour and abolishing slavery in almost all the British Empire. This work was published in 1837 the year of his death the year that his niece Victoria succeeded to the throne. Written by George Newenham Wright an Irish writer and Anglican clergyman. He was also a teacher teaching classics in Windsor as well as taking pupils boarding in his house at Frome before becoming master at Tewkesbury Grammar School. He wrtoe mostly topographical and educational works such as 'A Guide to the Lakes of Killarney' 'Scenes in North Wales' and 'The Chinese Empire Illustrated'. With a frontispiece illustrated title page and twenty-four plates being an extra illustrated edition. Collated complete. In the original half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally smart. Light discolouration to the leather to the joints with patches of rubbing to the joints. Further light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine extremities and to the paper to the boards. Light marking to the boards. Front hinge of Volume I is strained whereas the front hinge of Volume II is starting but firm. Front endpaper and frontispiece of Volume I is detached but present. Internally Volume II is firmly bound and Volume I is generally firmly bound with the textblock from the title page to page 16 and 83 to 86 are working loose. Pages are bright with scattered spots spotting being significantly heavier to the plates. Tidemarks to the bottom and fore edge of the frontispiece to each volume being heavier to Volume II. Octavo iv ii 107 pages plus an original albumen paper photographic frontispiece 184 × 113 mm. Flush-cut black cloth marked and a little rubbed at the extremities with slight loss at the head and foot of the spine; cloth on the front joint split but the joint is firm with minor conservation to one early opening; large printed paper title-label on the front cover has some loss to the bottom half mainly marginal but with the loss of one word and some letters of a few others in the bottom right-hand corner; minimal foxing; a very good copy internally excellent. The frontispiece a Townsend Duryea photograph is a composite of five numbered oval portraits; the identification key is printed on the verso of the title page. Ferguson 16706 not identifying the photographer and not indicating that the five photographic portraits are in fact one composite photograph. The revised second edition of this work Ferguson 16707 does not retain the photograph; it contains six tinted lithographs as does the version published in the 1879 collection of reprints 'The Native Tribes of South Australia' Ferguson 13095. <p>Loosely inserted is a lengthy cutting from the South Australian 'Register' of 24 April 1889: 'An Australian Native Fifty Years Ago' By the Late Mr F.W. Taplin' introduced thus: 'Subjoined is the lecture which was delivered by Mr Taplin before the Australian Natives' Association three nights before the author's tragic death in the Coffee Palace fire'.
