Printed by the reporter Lancaster PA 1805 Edward Shippen 1729-1806; Jasper Yeates 1745-1817; Thomas Smith 1745-1809 defendants. Sabin 30039; Shaw & Shoemaker 9353. Edward Shippen IV 1729-1806 was lawyer judge government official and prominent figure in colonial and post-revolutionary Philadelphia. In 1791 he was appointed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court serving with Jasper Yeates and Edward Burd both kinsmen and former students. Shippen became chief justice in 1799 but in 1804 was impeached on flimsey political grounds. The next year the Pennsylvania Senate acquitted him and his associates. 8vo 491 86 pp. The text is followed by a 96-page appendix which cites numerous legal points in previous cases as they relate to this one. Overall very good condition. A very rare volume still colorful and beautiful.The New England state of Connecticut played a relatively small but important role in the American Civil War providing arms equipment money supplies and manpower for the Union Army as well as the Union Navy. Several Connecticut politicians played significant roles in the Federal government and helped shape its policies during the war and the subsequent Reconstruction. Political Anti-Masonry which first began in New York gained a strong foothold in Rhode Island beginning in 1829. By 1831 the Anti-Masons convinced the state legislature to investigate Freemasonry: "Whereas the crimes and enormities within a few years committed in a neighboring State by certain Freemasons avowedly in the cause of masonry have excited universal indignation and abhorrence and have awakened jealousies and suspicions very unfavorable to all masonic institutions. Therefore in the hope of allaying the great and increasing excitement thus occasioned and that the innocent may be distinguished from the guilty if in this state there are any who can justly be charged with advocating the criminal doctrines imputed to freemasonry. are hereby appointed a committee fully to investigate and inquire into its causes." Internal binding is good other than some minor pulling. Pages are lightly tone due to age and some foxing and spotting is present with the worst being the end pages. No signatures or bookplates no handwriting or library markings present. Some corner wear and bumping though retaining square. Previous Owner name inside front cover in red ink stamp black ink stamp "271" on foot edge of pages. No other marks. Photos upon request.
