1820072306Albany NY: J. Buel 1820. Hardcover. Very Good with no dust jacket. Reprinted by the State's appointed printer; each year is paginated individually and begins with an index of vote outcomes. Some toning evident in margins and whatever pattern was originally given the page block edges has worn to an uneven brown; the front endpaper has split along the hinge and there is some residue of a bookplate on the pastedown; the binding remains secure though with a short tear in the legal-yellow cloth along the left front two shallow depressions at the front foreedge wear to the cloth at free and bound corners and noticeable handling prints; decoration at the spine including the red and black leather labels for title and year shows concurrent wear including chipping of leather and flaking of the gilt borders on the leather; nonetheless designed to be sturdy and to maintain its dignity on the shelf in which endeavor it continues to succeed. 932pp A well-kept reprint of the climactic volume in the golden age "Colony of New York" series that preceded the popular multiverse crossover "Constitutional Convention" starring John A. Hancock and Benjamin Franklin Sr. Spoiler alert The letter at the end of March 1776 alludes to events in Boston and taxation problems but later popularizations left out the anger at British welcome of "popery" in Quebec the decline of the three-branch government and the action-packed amendment scenes in which representatives competed to restate portions of the bill with more negative superlatives.; Tall 4to. 1852194391852. The 1852 Acts of the General Assembly of Virginia document the legislative priorities of a slaveholding state at mid-century capturing the intersection of racial control economic expansion and governance in the decades preceding the Civil War. Among the statutes is a revealing law titled "An Act to suppress Gambling by Negroes and white persons together" which legislates interracial interaction itself as a site of state concern demonstrating how Virginia authorities sought to regulate not only labor and movement but also informal social contact between Black and white populations. Such measures reflect the broader legal architecture of slavery-era society where anxieties over racial hierarchy and social boundaries were codified into everyday law. Alongside this the volume contains extensive acts related to taxation and fiscal policy as well as numerous charters and provisions for navigation companies steamship enterprises and other internal improvements-evidence of Virginia's participation in the wider market expansion and infrastructural development characteristic of the antebellum United States. The juxtaposition of economic modernization with increasingly codified racial restriction underscores the dual priorities of growth and control that defined Southern governance in this period.

Richmond: William F. Ritchie Public Printer 1852. First Edition. 8vo. Half legal calf over marbled boards with spine label; 3 4-403 pages including index. The volume compiles the full legislative output of the Virginia General Assembly for the year with sections devoted to taxation corporate charters transportation infrastructure and social regulation. The presence of laws governing interracial conduct situates the work within the legal history of race relations in the United States while the extensive material on navigation and steamship companies reflects the Commonwealth's investment in regional and national economic integration during a period of rapid territorial and commercial expansion. Binding shows a crack at the front board gutter but remains holding; moderate wear to leather and boards consistent with age and use. Interior generally clean with expected toning. Overall condition is very good. unknown

18369235Annapolis MD: William M'Neir 1836. Wrappers. Very Good binding. Octavo. 77 3 pp. First edition. In contemporary plain wrappers. Wrappers are detached and chipped; contents are generally foxed; small and early institutional stamp in the bottom margin of one page deep in the pamphlet; minor crease throughout the pamphlet from a vertical fold; dog-eared pages.

Quite a presentable copy of a scarce publication on the Baltimore Bank Riots of 1835 which grew out of the failure of the Bank of Maryland. There was a belief that its impending bankruptcy was anticipated by its officers leading to civil unrest. The issues at trial were whether Baltimore officials had reacted appropriately and adequately when unrest began and rioting actually broke out. This pamphlet gives numerous depositions as to events in the city during this extended period of civil violence. American Imprints identifies another issue of this with slight differences to the title page that was issued the same year. Despite there being two issues it remains remarkably rare in commerce. Henkels offered it in 1915; beyond this there are no other auctions or offerings noted by the usual sources. OCLC locates barely a dozen copies of both issues together. American Imprints 38812.
